Challenge 1018: The glass tank
The morning after my gig in Manchester last month I passed a shop selling vivariums (vivaria?). These are the sort of cases in which you'd keep reptiles, rather than goldfish. Sadly they were all turned to face away from the window, so I don't know what the sign said. Can you enlighten me? And of course you're going to have some reflections to deal with. High res is here. |

Well that's very nice Gordon. That's about as convincing as pint sized dinosaurs in a glass box could possibly be. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Try not to follow the DavidMac example and get your pocket picked if you are in Athens. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1018: The glass tank
Some very varied entries so far. My son and his partner and two energetic small boys arrived from Munich today for ten days. So this is all you will hear from me for a while. There is an aspect of this image that I feel I have not pulled off. The snake has grown to the point where it is pressed up against the inside of the glass walls of the vivarium. This is easy enough to suggest at the sides but how do you do it at the front? The area of contact would be roughly elliptic. This area would be flat and lack any of the tonal and shadow/highlight differences of the snake's normally cylindrical form. It would be principally front lit. Lacking curvature, the lines of the scale pattern would be straighter. I have tried to take all this into account. The results are unconvincing. I am curious to hear reactions and suggestions. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David it's your image of the "overblown snake": the inferior image is not in proportion. Try another snake with better resolution that's not so bloated (sharpness etc). Nice work as usual loyd Here's my take on your idea David UPDATED to include reflections |

David - Sorry, I can't help with the 'snake-in-the-box' idea, your version looks okay to me. Michael - That's one big angry snake, good job! |

Re: Challenge 1018: The glass tank
Not quite sure what to say to that Michael. The image is a piece of silliness in which either the reptile seller obviously didn't tell his buyer how big the baby snake would grow or the owner was simply too stupid to realise that baby reptiles grown into adult reptiles .... or maybe they have even overfed it! I'll happily accept that, as jokes go, it's definitely in the feebler part of the spectrum but, like or leave it, the whole point is that the snake has grown so enlarged and bloated that its tank can no longer contain it and it is forcibly pressed against the sides and the netting over the top. My problem, on which I was searching comments, was how to best convey this on the front face of the tank where we don't have the benefit of being able show the flattened circular profile that we can on the sides. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Frank I like the way you have picked up n the original 'Desert Starter Kit' from the back of the tank. Loyd the way you have turned the tank into a diorama with the desert on its walls is very neat. The black background really helps that pop out. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks David... it was a little cluttered with the original background. |
