Challenge 1019: Platform 9¾
I was passing through King's Cross Station yesterday when I saw the installation that has become Platform 9¾, as popularised by the Harry Potter books (explanation for Loyd’s benefit). It's just half a trolley wedged into a wall, but the queue for photographs stretched right across the station.

Curiously, though, it was nowhere near platform 9. And yet right by the real platform 9 there are a couple of doorways (one bricked up) that seem perfect for magickment. You'll have to remove the station junk, of course.

High res is here.

Thanks for the 'heads up', I would not have had a clue.

Well there's a good start.

Re: Challenge 1019: Platform 9¾
I spent quite a lot of time removing unwanted modern station from the image and adding Potterish signs an' stuff, only to realise that I still hadn't a clue what I wanted to do with it!

As usual, when lost, I resort to silliness. This time I think I have somehow landed with silliness quite appropriate for our times .... and theirs.

Worth enlarging for some of the details.

In the course of creating this image I discovered that the very distinctive British Railway's canopy edging is called dagger boarding ........

.......... not many people know that.

Details are certainly well done David... I too spent a lot of time reworking the background only to not know what to do next.

So I reworked the background and then covered almost all of it with various characters... J.K. Rowling was an afterthought. I have no idea who they all are.

Re: Challenge 1019: Platform 9¾
This entry uses so little of Steve's picture that it's drifting a bit off the point but I wanted to place his doorway where it belongs between platforms 9 and 10. It turned out that I had to completely invent this and build it from multiple Kings Cross photos. Much more work hidden here than might appear. There are quite a few anomalies but I'm not telling where!

Given it's massive popularity I was amazed how hard it was to find decent high res pictures of the cast except studio portraits looking straight at camera. Loyd has managed to make excellent use of these but I like to try and build a tiny narrative, however slight, into my images and wanted something more natural. It proved surprisingly hard here.

I have never seen the movies or read the books (my kids were too old) so you must forgive any mistakes or inaccuracies.

Quite remarkable David, the greater expanse of your remodel really makes it work. I'm not going to look for anomalies, who cares... very nice!

David, and Loyd nice work.

Dear fellow forum members and beloved site owner you may have noticed that I may not exactly be 100% on brief, but out of ten I give it nine and three-quarters accuracy

Griffins Loyd?

Michael, if your source picture is the same one I came across during my picture searches, you have done a remarkable job straightening out the curve! I am also impressed how strongly you have given the impression of wheel spin without actually spinning them. It took me quite a while to spot.

David, they were called Hippogriffs in the Harry Potter series, I became fascinated with the various fantasy creatures after a bit of research in wiki and google.

Beware the Billywigs and Werewolves when visiting Platform 9¾ after midnight.

I was surprised to find that at least one of the stories included werewolves.

Sorry about this last bit of silliness, I was up way too early and had nothing better to do.

Re: Challenge 1019: Platform 9¾
There are some good entries again this week as always. Just a quick explanation about my absence over the last few weeks. I have had a few personal projects and commitments taking up my time, not least, I have recently purchased a long-wheelbase Van that I am currently converting into a Motor Home all ready for the road next spring (or sooner weather permitting). Although fun, it is very time-consuming. We are also off on holiday for a few weeks from Sunday, so expect me to be back at the forum mid to end of September.
