Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
I passed yesterday evening at a very entertaining lecture on human powered flight at the Royal Aeronoautical Society, specifically covering the extraordinary Japanese annual Birdman event. The RAeS enjoys extraordinarily lavish headquarters just off London's Park Lane, and I spent some time exploring the building. I was particularly taken with the first floor landing, which includes this curious balcony facing the staircase. Ideal, surely, for the launch of some human powered flight? High res is here. ![]() |

I got a little (ok a lot) carried away with this one but I enjoyed every second of creating it. Slightly longer than my normal videos. http://vimeo.com/1059273344 _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

Interesting Gordon. I knew nothing about Lilienthal. Thanks. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
I had thoughts of animating this one but decided to just go with a still instead. I think that the RAeS might need to replace some of their carpet. ![]() _________________ Why is it that all the contestants in the ‘Miss Universe’ contest are all from Earth? |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Lilienthal was a major inspiration for the Wright brothers leading to their own experiments with gliders and working out some basic aerodynamics, stability and construction techniques before their powered flights. _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Silly was not my first impression of this challenge. My first thought was of Icarus from Greek Mythology, but I just couldn’t put anything together that I was satisfied with. I then decided to forget animations, and go for an ‘artsy’ interpretation… ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Gordon introduced us (well me anyway) to Lilienthal a pioneer who eventually lost his life to his pioneering passion. Now an unsung hero of aviation, Franz Reichelt, who also lost his life developing his invention - the parachute. He successfully tested his device with dummies but his first live attempt in 1912 resulted in him plunging to his death, in front of the press and Movietone news cameras, from the Eiffel tower. Here he is posing for photographers in London's Royal Aeronoautical Society shortly before his tragic return to Paris. ![]() This simple composite was far harder that it looks as finding suitable back views was surprisingly difficult. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

This narrow stairwell seems better suited to VTOL. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

"in front of the press and Movietone news cameras" ..... Correction: "British Pathé". _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Frank and David... I like to make 'artsy' stuff, but all too often I can't decide when to consider them finished. You did well finding the 'people from behind' views... well done! VTOL... ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Mind you, I think the chandelier and our Jules could be in for a nasty shock! During all the fun we had at the expense of Killah Jules a while back it has only just dawned on me, after all this time, that the nickname based on her real name of Juliette was of course a word play on kilojoules the unit of energy equal to one thousand joules. Sometime I can be really slow!! ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
