Challenge 1045: Suzi from Scunthorpe
You may remember my friend Giles, who first appeared, shirtless, in the Friday Challenge rodding out his septic tank – but that image was lost in the Great HotChiPs Crash of 2016. He did pop up again, though, in his helicopter in 2019. What you may not know is that, when he's not rodding out septic tanks, Giles writes highly entertaining comic novels, available on Kindle. I've had the pleasure of creating the covers for all 22 of them. In his latest novel, Suzi from Scunthorpe, one of the major plot points is the discovery by French police of a dead body in the swimming pool of a 60-something Englishman. I decided this would make a good cover image, and further decided the best way to view the scene would be as if the camera were at the bottom of the pool, looking up. It turned out to be rather more tricky than I'd expected. Can you give it a go and see what you can come up with? No starting images this week – you need to source your own material, as I had to. |

Re: Challenge 1045: Suzi from Scunthorpe
He's described as Tom Sharpe style comedy. I loved Tom Sharpe when I was younger! I think I had almost all his books. They're gone to the charity shops now. When we left our huge loft for a normal sized apartment there was no space for all our books. We kept nearly all the hardbacks but over three thousand paperbacks had to go! Heart breaking! "I decided the best way to view the scene would be as if the camera were at the bottom of the pool, looking up." Yes now I have to decide whether to go real and follow my treatise on what happens when you look up through water from below or whether to follow your own comment "Which raises the question: should we do what is actually right, or what looks right? I strongly tend towards the latter, as you know." Haven't made up my mind yet ..................... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1045: Suzi from Scunthorpe
The choice implied in my previous post above has become completely academic. On the basis of my research and trials so far, no matter how you treat it, your decision definitely comes perilously close to the broad category of 'shooting oneself in the foot'. The past tense implies that you have already done it. I do hope you will treat us on Friday to whether you limp or not! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David: I have indeed already done it. And yes, I did what looks right, rather than attempting to work out what’s actually right. Show me yours, and I’ll show you mine. |

Re: Challenge 1045: Suzi from Scunthorpe
Ant the fully uniformed policemen under water is hilarious. If Giles is as Tom Sharpe like as claimed then that kind of craziness is perfect! Frank we seem to be thinking alike again. Unsurprising we have a similar background. The Erhlich Pool installation just begs to be used for this. It's perfect for clean underwater that doesn't exist with the real thing. Everyonel great so far! This is so not my challenge. I am finding it very hard. But it's good to be pushed in directions which are not in my comfort zone. Try not to be too rude about my typography Steve! ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Had to make the animation, but was feeling guilty for not staying on the theme of a book cover. Decided to re-purpose the animation for a proper entry… of course, use of the ‘inspector’ may require some royalty fees. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1045: Suzi from Scunthorpe
Got really stuck on this. I realised I needed to break free of my literal minded streak and see things differently but couldn't get there. Now I think I have. Not quite what Steve had in mind I think, but I am happy with this one. ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1045: Suzi from Scunthorpe
For me one of the difficulties was in not knowing the story-line… whether Suzi is the victim, the perpetrator, or a witness. ![]() |
