Chapter 1060: Don't get Cross(ness)

Last weekend I visited the spectacular Crossness Pumping Station in East London, a glorious Victorian edifice built to pump sewage out of the city after the Great Stink of 1858. A magnificent building.

As I was wandering around I noticed this curious iron box, and couldn't work out what it was doing there. I asked one of the helpful volunteers and he told me it wasn't iron but painted wood, and had been put there as a prop during the filming of the 2015 sci-fi movie Victor Frankenstein. The production crew left it behind when they vacated the premises.

Too good an opportunity to miss, I thought.

High res is here.

A few years ago, I visited our local pumping station, Papplewick, and was amazed at the lavish decoration, plasterwork, cast iron, and gleaming copper and brass that the Victorians would put into what was essentially a work environment that would only ever be seen by the workforce, how the water companies of today have progressed sine then!

Re: Chapter 1060: Don't get Cross(ness)
Waterboard architecture, and pumping stations particularly, are the stuff of fantasy in many places in England. The beauty of pure engineering didn't seem to appeal to the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Their love classicism seemed to penetrate everywhere. Even the machines themselves often had gothic ornamentation.

To discover it was used as a Frankenstein movie location doesn't surprise me. I've filmed in Knebworth House and a deserted Battersea old town hall for horror movies.

Bit of a quick effort this week, but hope it fits the bill.

Well done Ant.

Thank you, Steve, for offering Woolly and I a chance to save face.

Re: Chapter 1060: Don't get Cross(ness)
In the interests of research I got hold of the movie and watched it. They make wonderful use of the pumping station (without it ever actually looking like one).

That aside it's not so much 'shock horror' as 'schlock horror'. Lots of predictably gruesome vaguely human bits and pieces but, like so many modern movies, an over reliance on FX over plot. Daniel Radcliffe is vaguely OK but the rest is completely over the top Victorian melodrama, and acted accordingly.

If you go here you will find an entire library of photographs devoted to this pumping station both restored and unrestored. It's the from the film location company they used.

The pumping stations are absolutely beautiful. Thank you for that link, David.

Young Frankenstein...you've done it proud, Loyd.

Well it's clear everyone's enjoying this one! Monkey business in the outside loo from Dwindt? Loyd's come up with a ton of stuff and Anna that's one of your best for a while. Especially the exterior.

I have used Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy and the monster from the 2015 movie they shot there. I had a LOT of fun with this! Do click the image for the big picture.

Last night when I posted my image HTCP was completely unresponsive with repeated timeouts. I couldn't post. I find this morning that my repeated attempts did in fact post but didn't show. This morning suddenly there they all were. Removing all but first now.

Not one of my best but it's just way too hot here in front of my MAC to do anything else.
