Challenge 1120: Vintage perambulation
I discovered this splendid 1940s pram at the History on Wheels museum near Eton a few weeks ago. I'd really like to see it taken out of the museum and put on the street where it belongs. Of course, you'll have to cope with the tricky perspective. Mariner, naturally, will want to give it a good scrub. High res is here.  |

I got lucky, perspective wise, in finding a background image to use, but I did take it back a little further than the 1940s.

I'm a little baffled Steve. There's nothing really in the photo to get a proper sense of scale. Pretty sure it's a real pram... but I see it as whatever I want it to be. Given the perspective, there's going to be a very limited number of background choices available.  |

Yes I think so too. Real but tiny. As you say we can view it as what ever we want. I’m finding myself oddly stymied by this one. So I’ve gone for bizarre historical interest. This baby gas mask really existed! The British government issued one and half million of them. A mask couldn’t be made to closely fit a small baby’s face. It was a full body suit within which the entire baby was hermetically sealed. It was equipped with a hand pump that mother used to circulate air through it. I was born into the last three years of WW2 and I remember the mask mother is wearing vividly! Not from when they were in use, I was still too small but, when the war was over, thousands of these were left gathering dust in cellars, attics and garden sheds. And for many young boys of my generation became play things …… I can smell the rubber even now! Fearing suffocation, modern parents would keep them well away from the reach of their kids but things were different back then ……. we were left to learn the hard way. I recon this is a toy pram. I battled so much to get an adult lady in a pushing position whilst sitting her in the correct perspective plains. The baby's face is the same size as an adult's face on such plain. To get the mother pushing in the correct path was a great struggle...but her she is with her prize and joy!  _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

I think your reflection is fine. We have no real way of knowing what is reflected or how it is lit. More disturbing to me is the apparent lack of a rear left wheel on the pram. It could just be hidden but, purely subjectively, I think a little bit would be visible. Given that you have probably modelled this and your skills in that department I have to presume your image is accurate and that it is, in fact, hidden .......... but, to my eye, it still feels wrong subjectively ..... even if it is not visible; surely we should feel its shadow? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Gas mask... I haven't thought about that in many years. I remember playing with one as a kid. I too remember the smell, and the slick feel of the rubber in particular. I can only assume that it was something my dad brought home after WW 2. |
