Contest 49: Finish the job
I've been at the woodword again. For the last couple of weekends I've been building my kids a treehouse: it's a triangular affair, with a platform over on the left to which I'll eventually add a rope bridge to another tree. The platform's finished, but I can't decide what to build on top of it. Can you give me some inspiration? High res is here. |

Good fathers build wooden treehouses. Great fathers build brick treehouses. |

Great job Neal. I opted for a more conventional tree house. I'll let you finish the slide. I got tired. : _________________ -Never met a PS'er I didn't like- Will Rogers |

Re: Contest 49: Finish the job
Some great ideas here. One or two are a little impractical for my garden, but hey, we can dream, right? Perspective was a big issue for most of you. The original treehbouse was photographed from below, so any structure on top really needed to follow that angle of view: a near-impossible task, without dismantling and reassembling any buildings you used. Glen came up with a great brick entry that nestles well into the foliage. The reflection of the tree in the windows is great, and the scale of the girl makes it into a kids' house rather than a real building. To make the perspective work better, though, I'd have tapered the building towards the top so it looks more like it was photographed from beneath. A fine wooden affair from MJ, although there's a serious perspective problem here! This one's toppling forwards off the platform - not sure it would pass my stringent Health and Safety requirements. A great cutout job, though - must have taken you ages chopping between all those vertical poles. And as far as the feel of it goes, this might be something I'd actually build. Excellent angles and perspective on NW Rain's great entry. And it does look like a great treehouse! Just a couple of problems: the colours are obviously too strong here. Desaturating them about 50% would greatly help the realism of this one. And - the biggest drawback - how on earth can my kids get in through a door that leads directly into a tree? Glen, that's a great idea. Pipe the music from my iPod up there, give them a fridge full of burgers and a microwave, and go back to sleep. It's a nice job, and the lighting is excellent. But I think the neighbours might complain… A really striking piece of work from BobbyJo, with two oversized buzzards nesting in the trees. This is a well constructed, well balanced piece: notice, in particular, how the bird in the foreground is in sharp focus, whereas the one at the back is blurred, as is the nest and background. This is a great technique that simulates depth of field on a camera, and greatly adds to the sense of realism. Great work! Neal's second entry is a really funny piece of work, whose effectiveness depends entirely on the body chosen for the unfortunate Mr Jackson. Not sure I'd want to let him near my kids, though… oh, hang on, he's innocent, that's OK then. Step right up, boys, and meet Uncle Michael. Just make sure you're back before bedtime. 'I wish I could do what's in my head', says Eventer - and that's a sentiment we can all identify with. There are two parts to every creative endeavour: the inspiration, and the hard slog that follows. The castle fits really well here, and the colouring matches the trees perfectly. Perhaps a little too perfectly? After all, the trees are supposed to be green, the castle isn't. I think that's the only real problem here: the figure on the projection sets the scale well, you just need to address the hue issue. A few rough edges around the cutout, but we'll put that down to JPEG compression issues in Atomicfog's glass dome. This is the kind of entry that people who don't know Photoshop would glance at, and say 'so what: you've superimposed a bubble on a tree.' Except, of course, that this is an incredibly hard thing to do well - and Atomic's done it to perfection. The distortion of the tree around the edge of the glass, the subtle shading, the highlights top left matching the angle of the shadow on the door - this is really great attention to detail, and a thoroughly convincing result. Fantastic work, AtomicFog, that's earned you your title of Virtual Visualizer. Excellent work! |

Desat, of course! Knew there was something that looked wrong, just couldn't figure out what needed to be tweaked. Thanks for the tip! Oh, there is a tree in the center of the platform! Oops, guess I missed that little detail. Well, they are "small" children, aren't they? lol! |
