Contest 95: Stairway to heaven
I photographed this staircase at my local rail station a few years ago, but never got around to using it. Where might it lead?

High res is here - and it's a GIF file, so it has a transparent background.

Hey Dave,

Nice effect! But the nose of the locomotive is much darker than the corresponding plane on the overpass and pillar. You could brighten the nose, or add more shadow to the overpass. But, overall, like the application!

EDIT: Actually, as I'm looking at this, the nose seems to be falling into the shadow of the overpass... (Sorry, just really into lighting and shadow right now... the fever will pass soon... )

I really like this pic ... Kinda surreal ... Like a station appearing in the middle of nowhere .... makes me think of a scene from one of those Mel Brookes type films where absolutely anything can happen!

Re: Contest 95: Stairway to heaven
I'm putting it down to my age but .. why can't I lay this staircase onto my JPEG background? It shows a 'no entry' sign when I try to do so. I have loaded the stair into PS as a GIF and saved it as a PSD but it still won't work. I have also noticed in the layers palette that is labeled as Index and it show as being locked. What's the trick to this??

Ted,

Go to Image>Mode and change from Indexed Color to RGB Color and you'll be set to go.

I had the same trouble, and was using the "select All/inverse and copy/paste to new layer routine".

An explanation of this lack of automatic recognition would be both helpful and interesting.

Michael, I ended up doing the same as you. Will take Bob's suggestion to try next time.

I did 'Ctrl A' and then dragged it across, don't suppose its the correct way but it worked.

Seems I just can't get away from kids. I spent over 25 years photographing school children, these days I stick to my grand children.

Wow... great entries! I really have to stop coming by here... needing to get mine done!

Vibeke, thanks for the before and after! Great to see what's been added.

Re: Contest 95: Stairway to heaven
The next ship to arrive at platform 2 is the Queen Mary2 express: calling at Barbados, the Seychelles and Fiji. A full a la carte restaurant service is provided on Decks A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,O,P,Q,R only. We apologise that Decks S,T,U,V have only running buffets.

Here is my stairway. Unfortunately it doesn't lead to anywhere as interesting as heaven. Somewhere far more prosaic - The other side
