Contest 137: Finish the job
A rather fine picture of a half-built room, courtesy of the excellent photos.com. As you can see, the builders have packed up and gone home, leaving this room in a rather sorry state.

Can you get it ready for me to move in by next Friday?

High res is here.

Nice job, Steve, considering your a custom stair builder. A hard act to follow here. WTG.

Thanks Dirtdoctor23.
I built this stair for someone at Lake Winnipesaukee which is the lake pic in the background as well.

By the way, if anyone needs a picture of a staircase for a montage or otherwise, please let me know. I have quite a few.

Hey Neil,
I just looked up the blending options part in Steve's book that you had mentioned from last week. Thank you for bringing that up. That is a really powerful tip that I forgot about!

Thanks man!

Shamed by everyone else's entries I chickened out and opted for the minimalist look

Re: Contest 137: Finish the job
This was a tricky one - but it's produced some really high quality work.

Steve Mac got in first, with a custom staircase (as you'd expect from a custom staircase builder) and many excellent additions: the view through the door and window, the upstairs window/balcony, the table and rug... all perfectly in perspective, and even the horizon's at the right height. A few extra details are worth pointing out: the way the light from the window bends as it runs over the open door; the shadow of the clock perfectly matching the window shadow; the intricate shadow of the handrail and spindles of the banister (see, Steve, I know my staircases) on the stairs themselves; and, perhaps best of all, the faint shadow of the table on the wall, cast by the reflected light from the window. Genius!

Newcomer katew says she's only been using Photoshop for three weeks! hard to believe, this is an excellent piece of work. All the elements fit well here, and I like the way the top of the light from the window has been edited to match the blinds. The floor, too, fits well in perspective - recognize that wood, anyone? The only thing I'd point out is that you really need more shadows on the floor to seat all those objects. often overlooked, shadows make all the difference to whether a montage looks real or not. Welcome to the forum!

A beachfront apartment from michael sinclair - and there I am, fiddling with my PDA when I should be admiring the view. Good furnishings and a great ceiling, Michael, but there are a couple of oddities here. Most obvious is the window light on the wall: we shouldn't see the frame! It's as opaque as the walls! And if you're going to keep using that TV on its glass stand, you should either make the glass transparent, or clone out the pieces of vertical support we can see through it so it looks opaque.

A very homely scene from mguyer, with an old Friday Challenge appearing on the wall. I really like the way the door opens onto a set of basement stairs - a neat idea. And the second entry certainly adds some life: the ceiling lights work particularly well, I think. Is that a young mguyer tripping towards us?

A truly serene room from Keiko; with classic furniture neatly reflected in the polished floor, and an array of downlighters in the ceiling. My only problem here is with the door itself, which is more of an external front door than one you'd find inside an apartment - especially one as minimal as this. Good to see you back here, Keiko!

Vibeke's given us a pushy salesman, and a guy who really doesn't look as if he's interested. Surprising, really, especially as the house comes partly furnished: just the one chair, but a shedload of books. Neatest touch here is the shadow of the tree on the wall - inspired!

A really funny montage from josephine harvatt, with excellent names for those disgusting colour swatches, and a brilliantly accomplished newspaper TV listings clipping (with great torn edges). The room itself has been perfectly cleared of builders' debris - and the window light expertly carried across the door. Fine work!

And to end with, a dazzling tour de force from Tom: a fantastic mural that Neal would certainly relish, a dab of Sistine Chapel on the ceiling, the skeleton at the window, and the fine furniture. What really makes it, of course, is the beautiful light form the window: absolutely stunning, Tom. And the detail of the smoke, wisping up and pooling around the ceiling, is amazing!
