Contest 235: Museum lighting
I had to meet a colleague from overseas recently, and could think of no better meeting place in central London than the cafe in the Great Court at the British Museum. This features a recently completed glass roof covering what was previously a windy courtyard, transforming it into a beautiful indoor space: everywhere you look, you want to take a photograph. Of course, it really comes into its own when the sun comes out, at which point... well, what would this scene look like on a sunny day? High res is here. ![]() |

Stefan that's brilliant!!! ![]() I love the British Museum. Looking forward very much to my next trip back there. Do they still have that fantastic totem pole in the main hall? I got some terrific pictures of it but they ended up with pink streaks. Nobody mention digital cameras to me - BAH!!! Ok down to business; two from me.. I hope Michelangelo doesn't mind me borrowing from his masterpiece in the second one. I have a thing for stained glass windows and the criss cross roofing popped the idea into my head. I did attempt to make it a bit more stained glassy, but I couldn't get a good effect with it. Must look up a few tutorials for this actually. P.s. Steve - any chance of a few shots of the Natural History Museum? I'd move into that place if they let me, lol. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Myguyer that skylight was excellently cut out I'm very impressed by how well people have done that and I especially love Stefan's movie scene painting very impressive as I'm just getting into the power of After Effects then this appeals to me - do you follow tutorials or do you make your own tutorials because I would love to get some insight. |

Re: Contest 235: Museum lighting
Thanks very much for the nice comments:-) Ok, I'll try and explain how to do this...... I don't work very systematically, so it's hard to explain it step by step. I tend to know how it should look like and I work towards that, so I keep jumping from one bit to another and tweak whatever needs tweaking. The rays of light are very easy. You just make a duplicate of the image and run the radial blur filter on it. On full strenght and with "zoom". Put the little plus sign where you want to rays to come from and then put that layer on "screen". Just paint away the bits you don't want. The"tone" and "color" of the image are done by adjustment layers that are masked black, and then all the bits I want are painted in. So I play with curves, levels, desaturation and solid color adjustments. The solid color ones are then put in overlay and again, painted in. I wanted the shadow parts to have a bit of a blue tone in it and the sun parts very warm, so I did two solid color adjustment layers. For the golden tone I also do a high contrast, warm, curves layer, put that on screen, mask it black and paint the highlights in with a low opacity brush. You can also just do a warm ,curves adjustment layer and paint that in. there's many ways of achieving the result you want. So basically it's a lot of adjustment layers and a lot of painting. Also I did a blurred version of the whole thing , masked that black, then painted some of that in on corners etc. to get a "bloom" effect. Hope that helped a little. |

Re: Contest 235: Museum lighting
Here's mine - I confess to finding a hard copy of one of my Great Court photos which I used as a rough guide, but even so it was hard going - in the end I went for what looked right as opposed to what was accurate ! I may come back later with a less vanilla version, but in the meantime I wish I had been the first to think of adding some graffiti ... ![]() _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |
