Terrific Gordon. Truly surreal. Love it. A wonderfully original approach.

Remember when you could get eyes for the OS taskbar that followed the mouse pointer?

I didn't think I was going to have time to do one of these. Not my best animation, but it felt good to do one.

Re: Challenge 813: Real Eyes
Hello,
I spotted this Opticians sign outside a shop in Chester and thought the sign 'slightly' exaggerated the positive effect of wearing their glasses !
The poor quality of the photo is due the rushed nature of taking the photo as it was snowing, hailstones and raining with a strong wind , not nice !
I do notice many shops have very poor signs which are hard to read or don't even give an idea of what they sell or services they provide.
All the best from Neale.

Re: Challenge 813: Real Eyes
Thanks to all for your comments. I had lots of fun putting this one together.

Loyd - you revived long forgotten memories for me with your reference to Bizarroworld. I would go out on a Saturday morning with my pocket-money to my favourite book shop to buy the latest DC comics and Bizarroworld was one of the weird concepts that introduced me into a more surreal take on life.

Just slightly surreal

Slightly...?? Made me think of "Bizzaro World" in the old DC Comics.

It took a bit of work in Cinema and it's not really right but ... Earth transformed into Bizarroworld.

Pleeeeaaasse don't mention Mister Mxyzptlk

Re: Challenge 813: Real Eyes
First to tackle the optician this week was DavidMac, with a dig at British political advisor Dominic Cummings - and that’s a rather neat drawing of him, too. Of course, the jogger should be wearing a face mask. The Safe Specs gag in the second entry is ingenious - and immaculately created. Brilliant. I enjoyed the tortoiseshell frames in the third entry, and the extension in the fourth entry.

A discreet sign from Nick Curtain, rather tasteful at that. All italic lower case, though? Maybe too discreet. I like how you’ve reproduced it on the hanging sign.

A 3D cleanup from lwc, still in the spirit of the original. A slightly curious perspective on the 3D name, but the idea is sound. I like the added cyclist; not sure about the dog in the road. A subtle animation in the second entry. A somewhat less subtle animation in the third entry - now that’s quite a makeover! I wonder, would he get many customers?

Ben Mills’s makeover seems to be attracting a crowd, despite the somewhat funereal nature of the sign. George Cross? As in the military medal? A very good crowd, but they could do with some ground shadows.

A gloriously animated sign from GKB, with seriously spooky rolling eyes. The passers-by are excellent - that elephant is a real treat, with a beautifully made shadow (although drop there opacity to 50%). I like the Dalek, too, but I think it’s the skeleton on the bicycle that wins for me. Splendid. But see my comment on Sara’s entry, below.

Great to see a new animation from srawland, with a spooky cat’s eye reveal at the end. Very fine sound effects really bring this to life. A small but important point, for both you and Gordon: when you slide the shutter up, it needs to shear to maintain the correct angle relative to the top of the sign:

A really funny entry from JimH, with cartoon popping eyes. I like how you’ve moved the jogger, and that’s a terrific makeover on the shop and its sign - although I’m not sure your typography passes the easy legibility test. A touch of ground shadow beneath the people is all that’s needed now.

For some reason michael sinclair has converted the optician into a fish restaurant - and a Scottish one at that. And since the restaurant photo was a different shape, it’s been squeezed horizontally to fit. I’m sure you have your reasons, Michael. I like the passers-by, although I can’t see how any of them would get over that step into the restaurant.

An immaculately reconstructed sign from Vibeke, with an artfully rendered poster on the shutter. The supper floor shutters and plants really help. Small point: that open window on the show next door is pointing the wrong way - we’re looking at it from the other direction.

Plenty of chrome lettering from Frank, with a rather fine painted shutter. I like the view through the door, although I’d bring the floor level down a little; and the Closed sign is charming.

A clean-up from Mariner, with an added cast of characters. I like the interaction between the man (and his fine reflection) and the woman upstairs, and good to see the shop next door open. Even if it does sell Ebola tea. Sandie seems to be more of a secretary than a hairdresser, though.
