Challenge 825: Herculaneum
A quick trip to Naples in Italy last weekend, getting a final dose of sun and culture before lockdown rules are reimposed (as will surely be the case).

On Sunday we visited the Roman town of Herculaneum. Unlike nearby Pompeii, when Vesuvius erupted in the first century AD it buried Herculaneum not beneath molten lava, but beneath eight metres of ash. And that meant when it was excavated the ruins were in far better condition.

Here's a typical house, and it seems extraordinary both that it's so complete and that you're allowed to wander at will throughout what is effectively a vast open-air museum.

One for Mariner, obviously: can you restore this dwelling to its former glory?

High res is here. You might like to incorporate the floor from this building.

Actually this is not far from Ingrid's advice which was "Lots of naked people eating grapes.".

I don't think she had a classical education.

Re: Challenge 825: Herculaneum
Quick question Steve. Is this a courtyard or a room that's lost its ceiling?

Re: Challenge 825: Herculaneum
This is so NOT my kind of challenge but here goes anyway.

Step one restoration. I am unsure if this was originally a room or a courtyard. So I have left it open at present.

The angle of the pool is really bizarre but it seems to conform to the photo .........

Next step will be to inhabit it with a bit more fun than this dreary image. The iconic gay photographer David La Chappelle springs to mind.

That's not dreary at all, David, in fact it's full of interest. Excellent work. On my picture I have straightened up the pool - I put it's funny angle down to earthquake damage. The walls seem a bit wonky as well. That painting of trees looks Japanese. I don't think the Romans ever got as far as Japan.

Loved the take on Venus and Mars. You could do worse than borrow the bloke from Ants entry ...

It is to me. I find restoration of this kind more spadework than fun.

I can't wait to see what you will make of this. I have have not portrayed this as it might have been in its day but more what it would be like fully restored. I have a feeling you will re-construct what it might have been like when fresh and new. Now that is a challenge.

My cue comes from the brochure I posted. I also notice in the photos online as it is now you can see the vestiges of these trees. I agree it is bizarre. It looks almost Art Nouveau.

I usually do, but this time there is a lot missing so I am going to have to invent something believable. Meanwhile I am cruising along avoiding repeating anything done by others. Especially by you !

Well done on the floor Ant. It's really given me a headache.

Very nice David. Very crisp and concise. I don't quite know what is happening on the right side of the photo either. I suspect the image may be going into negative perspective.

Well done Josephine. Walk into the quad and Tombstone is right there.

I agree with David. I love the floor. I used scaffold to but unlike you, I was just getting lazy and using them to cover up...or sick and tired of adding more layers.

My image is so big I battled to get it small enough and have lost a bit of detail. I'm sick of layers and that right perspective really messed me around...which caused endless problems with the floor.

Steve, if you've got a problem with the decor, see the contractor. He's on the scaffolding.
