Re: Challenge 828: On the deck
Anna - On further close study I do have a comment. I think they are not quite as spot on as I first thought. This is going to be very difficult to explain without getting horribly technical. But here goes .....

The shadow of the stone wall is coming more or less directly towards camera just slightly to it's right. That is, in my view, correct and absolutely consistent with the sun position relative to the wall. However it does not take into account the effect of the lens on the perspective. The planks of the terrace are also coming directly towards camera but they are 'fanned' outwards by the perspective imposed by the lens. In my view the shadow would be similarly affected. In actual physical terms it would be close to parallel with the planks and would therefore be subject to the same perspective as they and should be similarly angled outwards to remain more or less aligned with the planks.

I hope I have expressed that coherently.

Let's see what the Guru has to say on Friday.

Well I am no animator but I think that the croc is one of the most accomplished animations I have ever seen from you. Impressive. Chapeau!!

Carrying on from my previous comment. You have captured that fluid slow moving look of the croc which deceives people into thinking they are slow .... which, went they want, they most certainly are not!!

Well Michael, it may have taken a lot of work but your crocodile is really convincing. Well done! Gold star. And thanks for your critique of my own effort.

Re: Challenge 828: On the deck

Michael Sinclair you have positively outdone yourself this week! The movement and the pace is perfect. Well worth the effort. Well done.

David, thank you so much for your detailed explanation. I'm still in the dark though (bad pun ) as my cognitive ability doesn't extend that far

It's not cleverness Jim. Simply that I live in a French speaking country and have had to learn it. To be honest it's pretty primitive.

Now I hope I am not about to be horribly patronising, but when I think back to your first submissions you have come a long way! They are getting better and better with each week. This little group is a great stimulus.

You're right Mr. Sinclair, the original version did not start out to be a sunset. About half-way through construction I added the sunset but was unable to complete it properly. Here is an improved (hopefully) entry that started from the 'get-go' to be a sunset.

Your croc is very good, too bad about the dreaded loop bump/jump though.

It's hard to explain. Basically in real life the shadow is parallel to the planks. So in the image it should follow their line outwards and stay parallel with them.

Hopefully Steve can do better than my stumbling explanations. Or maybe he'll disagree and shoot me down in flames .......

Anna and Steve I do hope I am not being presumptuous here but I think it should look something like this.

Let's hope I am not leading with my chin .........

Re: Challenge 828: On the deck
Thank you David for going to the trouble of doing this. It could be right or it could be wrong..I just don't know but I'm happy to accept any suggestions.
I tried this experiment about half an hour ago to see how the shadow from the wall fell and this is what it looked like. Obviously lighting is different but interesting to see how it appeared.

Re: Challenge 828: On the deck
Hi Anna here is the situation in a context you will be able to understand - 3D modelling. My modelling here is very rushed and basic but enough to understand what's happening.

The top illustration is a plan view without perspective showing the physical layout of the shadows which, because the sun is an infinitely distant light source, are parallel.

The lower illustration is the same 3D model viewed in 3D through a camera. You can see how the perspective affects the shadow.

Sorry to go whanging on about this but, truth is, you really got me intrigued.

Well this is fun Anna!

You have just prompted me to make one of my first ever 3D animations!!

Now I will stop and leave you in peace.

Re: Challenge 828: On the deck
Everybody has been very busy and some great works have been submitted.

I must say that I had absolutely no idea what to do this week so I cut, bent and pulled until something took place, sort of.

Anna, I posted a very nice shadow tutorial under "problems and solutions" a while ago. It may help.

I take your word for it David. Looks correct! Im very curious, as well, as to how Steve sees it. May this animation be the first of many

Re: Challenge 828: On the deck
First to populate the deck this week was Ben Mills, with a remarkably restrained pair of diners. I like the subtle interaction between them, and the light shadows.

Drones and planes from lwc, with a very mixed batch of diners - cocktail dresses with bikinis? A curious pairing. I like the framing in the second entry, and the added dining area. I like the snow in the third entry, and especially the intermittently head-shaking dog. Not a very French purpose for a vintage Citroên. But then nor is the Prosecco in the fourth entry, with its curious array of shadows. Am I supposed not to comment on the remarkably high tech pizza wagon in the fifth entry? Ah – I see it’s been reworked. An interesting approach to marketing.

Splendid peaches from DavidMac, beautifully anthropomorphised. The one bottom left reminds me strongly of Hieronymus Bosch. A fine collections of signs, too, and thanks for the explanatory French lesson.

A clever reworking of Ben Mills’ entry from Michael Sinclair, with added cast. I’m not sure about the trolley in the foreground, which looks to have been compressed vertically; always a difficult trick to pull off. Trying to understand the relationship between the old men and the dolly birds on the right; I’ll assume they’re granddaughters. As always, I find your busy skies very distracting. A very fine croc in the second entry, with an ingeniously worked shadow and convincing movement. The overall sense of motion would be much more effective if the sea moved much slower, and the sky not at all: try it, and you’ll see what I mean.

A typically immaculate entry from Mariner, with a beautifully cut out dining table and fisherman. Is that a lonely bottle of cognac on the table? I can’t work out what’s sitting on the chair. But expertly done, and the boat is perfectly placed in the background. And - Taylor Swift, in the second entry? There’s a surprise. I like the new railings, with excellent perspective, and the replaced background. I think she could do with a better spotlight, though.

An ambitious entry from tooquilos, facing directly into the sun. I like the conversion of the tower, and the placement of the chairs. The chair shape makes the shadows tricky to draw, but they are close. With the sun that low, the shadows should be rather more extended, and hidden on the right in the shade of the tower. (Oh, and while I’m nitpicking: you need to cave the fishing sign on the tower wall, and the highlights on the railings should be on the other side. DavidMac’s reworking of the shadows is closer, but I’d question whether the tower should be darker on the left; surely the sun would brighten that edge and even dazzle slightly? An interesting subsequent discussion, too - I’m just sorry I don’t have time to do my own alteration this week. I like the cloud movement in the animated version – but that’s a curious first scene.

I like JimH's recolouring of the drum, and the added skyline. Given the height of the railing, though, don’t you think the people are rather too small for the scene, especially at the back? Cool car.

A lone fisherman from GKB, somewhat obscured by the placement of the boat behind him. I like the way the sign has been moved to perfectly wrap around the curved building. Great to hear Satchmo and Bing in the animated version, although your fisherman really needs to decide to do with his catch.

A splendid relocation from dwindt, and an ingenious bending of the railings around the corner. Excellent colour matching, producing a very coherent scene.

Thanks Steve, a good challenge. Yes, that's a lonely bottle of Hennessy. The angler has drunk most of it. Sitting on the chair is the angler's tackle bag. Yes, Miss Swift coulddo with a better spotlight, but I was running out of time.
