Challenge 838: The ash tunnel
If you ever visit Cambridge - that's the one in England, not the one Massachusetts - you might care to pay a visit to the pumping station museum. Among the many exhibits is this ash tunnel, which you can read more about below.

Can you wind back in time and show these furnaces being raked out? Of course, you'll need to open the iron doors before you get stuck in. Or you could just stick Napoleon's head on a different body.

High res is here.

David, I despaired at the prospect of facing a brick wall in doing this challenge: it was...it was difficult! Then you do--to perfection--exactly what was asked of you...brilliantly! I know there are at present no other contenders to compete with you at present, but I'm awarding you the Gold Star. However, I would like to inject a note of caution here in that you must not "encourage" him to produce similar challenges by producing sterling stuff as you have done today

Michael we all have our brick walls and open highways. I couldn't begin to attempt, let alone pull off, the animations I have seen from you and others.

My first two images were all about light and shadow. That's my forte. Maybe others will think them good - maybe they won't. Either way, it's what comes easily and naturally for me. It was more fun than effort.

The third took me outside my comfort zone. But isn't that why we are here? To be challenged and to be stretched? Even when I really don't like it, like last week, it's still good to try and cope and get a result.

I would like to inject a note of caution here in that you must not "encourage" him to produce similar challenges by producing sterling stuff as you have done today.

I don't think Steve chooses challenges by results. Even if he does, I think it would be naive to hope that these few words are going to have a very significant effect.

Occasionally I send him a photo I think would be an amusing challenge. A couple of times a year perhaps? I would hate to have to come up with one every week. Especially if it is to appeal as universally as possible. Now that IS a challenge.

Oh dear, oh dear. You've really got me into seriously pompous pontificating mode! Sorry folks, my apologies ........... please excuse me ..........

But thank you for the star Michael!

David, Wonderful work, I haven't even started to think about what to do. My excuse is that I'm spending all my time in the garden, only came in now because it started to rain.

Thank you. I really enjoyed this one.

The third entry is the kind of thing you excel at and with which I am far less comfortable. But I wanted to give it a try. Sadly I lack your application and patience ........

David your third entry is fine. Personally I would have made all those upstairs windows transparent and tried to have sunlight coming from a high angle, while darkening all the rest of the picture. But yours is a good picture which required a fair amount of patience.

Oh Michael! Did your mother never teach you about red rags and bulls?

David, I appreciate and acknowledge the work involved in your second/third image but with your first one - you have positively nabbed it. I can almost feel the heat from the fire. Fabulous.

First off thank you Anna. It just came naturally this week. Lots of fun.

I always love the tiny incidental touches in your animations like the dripping puddle in the interior left foreground.

Now I have a question. Why go to all the trouble of modelling and rendering new boiler doors? The reason is obvious for the wagon wheels but the door movement is linear without appreciable parallax. Why not simply extract the 2D originals and 'slide' them. You would need a very slight resize with the movement but I wouldn't have thought much else. They would seem to me far less problematic than the perspective difficulties of the wagon which would have needed a truly vast amount of work to remove. Am I missing something obvious here?

Anyway it's lovely work as always. I like your electric lights much better than mine. My fandom is undimmed ....... but the door shadow on the flames is just a teeny bit naughty!

No..not missing anything obvious David It's simply a case of being in lockdown and having time on my hands and I felt like making new doors

I can relate to that ...... the same reason for my multiple entries and excessive chatter recently .............

Re: Challenge 838: The ash tunnel
Far, far too much time on my hands ........ but this is positively the last variation.

Because of my very extravagant manner of working where I like to keep everything adjustable, this image ended up with 52 image layers, 65 adjustment layers and 85 mask layers.

That's actually surprisingly modest for me. As usual, after all the years I having been using Photoshop, I still really don't know if this is clever or merely profligate.
