Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
This week Joe Biden takes up his post as POTUS, and Michael Sinclair thought we should commemorate the occasion by putting his head on Mount Rushmore.

It's been years since we've done one of these, so let's do it. You'll have to source your own Biden from the angle you think most appropriate; I'd suggest this view of Mount Rushmore, as it gives plenty of space for additional sculpture.

Bonus points if you manage not to include Trump in your image.

Well now this is interesting. In the past when I have tried to source politicians one of the problems is that, so often, they are on podiums and therefore photographed from below. Right now that's exactly what's needed. But suddenly I find that with with Biden there are far, far less low angle pictures. Not sure why. Other problem is Biden smiles a lot. That somehow doesn't seem quite right for the present context.

I've still found a few, no problem, but it was a surprising little discovery.

Michael do you really want us to put your head on Mount Rushmore?

Had to stop tinkering with this one. Might revisit it later

Thanks Michael. I wasn't very satisfied with the first try so I had another go at it including your suggestions. Still not sure I have nailed it yet but here is v2.

Re: Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
Well Michael this damn nearly brought me to my knees. I am still not happy, but no end of time and fiddling has brought any significant improvement. It is still too 'human' but I am stopping here.

The difficulty is getting rocky and sculptural without dehumanising and destroying recognisability. This is made no easier by the fact that Biden has a rather bland unremarkable face. (Sorry Joe. )

This is one time I have wished I could really draw instead of relying on primarily photographic techniques. I think this would be better approached as an artist in the traditional sense than as a photographer.

Hair and eyes are the toughest.

This was a real toughie - how many shades of grey can there be?

Second attempt - very different technique - a bit more successful

David, You almost there Were it not for this challenge, then I would not fully appreciate the full talent that you have.

I was so excited by your "fantastic effort, that I had to see if I could improve on your already excellent efforts which entailed working on your entry; however, I can only give an "alternative" for you to evaluate which I have uploaded for you to see.

So no more self-deprecation Mr Macdonald

NB By clicking on your image or indeed mine one can see more detail and realism.

Re: Challenge 840: Inauguration Day
OK. It's in the oven. Short break.

First off I am not self denigrating. What I posted was genuinely as far as I could get. It's also clear that, up to this point, I am not the only one who has found this unexpectedly challenging. It's going to be very interesting to see what comes next.

So your changes:

Very tiny differences. But of course I may have missed some.

You have changed the sky which certainly 'pops' the figures but, to my eye, makes no material difference to whether Joe looks like stone or not.

You have reduced contrast on the left side which makes for a greater consistency that helps Joe fit in naturally. Yes to that.

You have removed the cracks in his face that I added. I think that's a shame. I feel they did help the stony look. So no to that.

The next bit is hard to judge and I am not even sure if I am not imagining it. I get the feeling that, in a few places, you have managed perhaps to smooth the skin texture and make it less skin like and easier to interpret as stone. If I am right then yes to that.

At this point, I am going cross eyed and no longer trust my own judgement. You have got me looking for differences that may or may not exist.

......and with that, back to the kitchen.
