Challenge 845: Historic Le Mans
I stopped briefly in Le Mans while driving through France last year, and was impressed by the medieval town centre.

Here's a corner that particularly intrigued me: the raised area on the left seems to be a natural stage, or perhaps it's simply to elevate the drain out of the gutter. A shame those stained glass windows have gone.

Can you find something suitable to take pride of place on this raised dais?

High res is here.

I hope you are not referring to Loyd's entry!

I quite like wonky and funky. That being said and done I haven't a clue what to do with this at present. Mummery springs to mind but seems rather dull and obvious .......

No Loyd, your entry is fine. I was referring to the odd perspective of the Challenge.

There won't be any mummers in mine this week, but another cleanup is definitely likely.

Don't know why - but this one didn't come easily. Like pulling teeth. But I got there in the end.

David, really good stained glass, lighting effects, and atmosphere, but your puddles don't look quite right. The reflections look a bit odd.

Yes. I struggled with these. I'm not happy but left them in to see what suggestions Steve might make.

The difficulty in part is that the puddles are in the light but reflecting a dark area that is not lit. They are also not deep. For this reason I left a little bit of transparency so you can just see the paving through the reflection. I'm not quite sure what I should really be doing. I also feel that maybe the odd cobble should peek through the surface. I think they look just too flat and perfect. But that would be very tricky to achieve.

Maybe I'll re-visit maybe not. Let some time pass and view it fresh from a distance.

David, I think your overall representation is excellent! But why do you insist on putting a puddle in the scene--especially if it does not fit

Here's an image with a puddle with the effect that you were trying to achieve, so I hope this helps you...and Macdonald I expect a perfect third attempt.

David, the puddle in the second version is very good.

I don't know Michael, I felt the scene needed a puddle. Perhaps that drain was the trigger.

I also struggled a bit with this one but the week ahead is very full on so I'll just submit what Ive done and hope for the best

Because it's a challenge Michael. For me these challenges aren't about being clever, they are about being stretched. Being taken outside what I might otherwise do if I stayed within my comfort zone. The lighting effects in this are well within that zone so I wanted to try something else that would be more challenging.

I could, of course, take an image such as the one you supplied and strip it in. But that's not the point. The point is I wanted to see if I could create it myself from scratch.

Drain was my original trigger although the second puddle is divorced from it.

Love the light beams! ..... and the animated puddle works beautifully.

Re: Challenge 845: Tussaud Le Mans
Suspicions of corruption in the Le Mans city council are being aired after the recent acquisition of the historic Old Quarter by the Theme Parks Division of the mighty Tussaud Group.

I agree. If you don't get stretched you don't grow. Before starting a new Challenge I often spend some hours wondering how to make it as outstanding as possible. Then, no matter how hard it seems, I just go for it. Often I go down a blind alley and have start again, but, what the hell, I have a whole week and am under house arrest anyway.
