Challenge 846: Plane restoration
Here's one that should appeal to both Mariner and GKB, although I fear Michael Sinclair will reach for his explosives.

I photographed this wreck at the Imperial War Museum. Can you make it airworthy?

High res is here.

Well that’s going to be a real restoration project.

The airframe is a Japanese Mitsubishi Zero if it helps anyone’s research.

Yes it does help, Gordon. Thanks.

Thank you Gordon. Even with the knowledge of what it is I cannot see how this can be restored..hmm. Will be interesting.

You can interpret “restored” in any way you like.

Nothing is impossible to the restoration man.

I think the comic version looks quite nice to.

Excellent Denis, even down to a very accurate paint scheme although I might query the cockpit frame but otherwise ...

Re: Challenge 846: Plane restoration
Thank you. Yes, there's a lot of distorting going on around the cockpit from the fire heat. I didn't know what to make of the sliding mechanism. I can't imagine that would be exposed.

Re: Challenge 846: Plane restoration
I had another stab at it. "G" is definitely right. The cockpit isn't right and my windows should have been grimed up.
So lets just say the fuselage has just come back from the spray booth and the cockpit frame still has to be fabricated.

Re: Challenge 846: Plane restoration
I think that's as near perfection as you're going to get Dennis. Well done

Third world restoration. A Mitsubishi garden cloche.

I find all of them quite astonishing. Terrific Dennis.

Given the astonishing speed of your submissions I find myself obliged to ask: "Did you find a Mitsubishi model for download or is this fully modelled by you?". Either way this is beautifully done and, if the second is the case, nothing short of remarkable.

Re: Challenge 846: Plane restoration
Well in any restoration project you need to get rid of all the grease, muck and primer paint and get back to the bare aluminium before you get stuck into the rebuild.

Re: Challenge 846: Plane restoration
Wow Gordon, that's clever and really looks like its been sand blasted.

Try and carry some of the front panels backwards and manipulate them into shape and you'll take the cake. Well done.

Yes David, I was fortunate to have a model in my 3D folder. I have some rather beautiful models of aircraft, including a few WW1 aircraft.

I would have taken ages otherwise and really didn't have the heart or the time to tackle it. Never thought of Gordon's approach. His approach is amazing and I hope he tries to extend the fore panels aft. It would align perfectly with the draft and pretty straight forward to achieve. Well thought of "G"!

Re: Challenge 846: Plane restoration
Because I felt guilty of cheating with another 3D model, I rebuilt the engine compartment and fire wall in Photoshop. That was a lot of work.
