Michael I like the last one: good lighting

Vibeke, it might be prosaic, but again you have accomplished a very realistic entry: it looks very natural; moreover, I can't tell it's been photoshopped, so I'm sure the site owner will be of a similar opinion.

Thank you, Michael, you are being very kind.

Re: Challenge 852: Digging in the sand
Been a bit absent this week. Post vaccine nasties. Been following but not compos mentis enough to comment. Over now. I'm fine.

Michael when I saw your first "Digging for Fish Bait" I kept thinking Michael always stays close to brief but where's the link to the original? Took me ages to realise what you had done. Very clever. Would the third be more appropriate if he was in a sand bunker? (Think that's what it's called. I am no golfer.)

Vibeke I agree entirely with t'other Michael. If I hadn't known, I would never have guessed it was 'shopped'. Simple but very impressive.

I have posted two images (same painting), and want your opinion which you prefer: one is untouched (second image), and the other (first image) has had an adjustment.

If you are mean the scenic views of Shropshire (my home county) I prefer the second image, because the first looks underexposed.

David, thank you for your comment. Yes, a bunker was needed, but it was 04:25 and I was tiring of the the subject.

Re: Challenge 852: Digging in the sand
First to play in the sand this week was GKB, with an entertaining Planet of the Apes reference. Nicely done, with a soft reflection. Not sure about the island of foliage in front of the book. A very fine second entry - have you got a new reflection plugin? A rather magnificent sandcastle in the third entry, and that’s a fine hole. Some vertical streaks would perhaps accentuate the depth of the hole; and maybe reduce the saturation to match the surrounding sand.

Excellent digging action from lwc, and I like the geyser. But don’t oversaturate the repeated clothing! A profusion of diggers in the second entry; I like the varying speeds. And the birds. A gorgeous third entry, with the duck and goose; but of course it’s the turtle that really steals the show. Very small detail: is the digger’s reflection out of step with the original?

A really funny entry from Mariner, sidestepping reconstruction this week for a perfectly judged burial scene. Excellent lighting and shadows, and the pose of the hand is spot on. I spoke too soon: reconstructing the digger in the second entry must have been a vast amount of work. It’s a terrific job. Just a couple of small points: that arm is somewhat plasticky - perhaps a touch of grey hair would help it. The second point is a trickier one to remedy, and that’s the issue of the right boot, which looks a lot shorter than the left. How to make it clear it’s turned away? I have tried this with shoes many times in the past, and it’s very hard to get right. I like the serene fishing scene in the third entry, which has a real charm to it. And I see you’ve repurposed your digger as a golfer in the fourth entry - whose golfing gloves are exactly right, although I think there might be rumblings in the clubhouse over the boots. Also… since he’s using a putter, shouldn’t there be a hole nearby?

An astonishing range of sand sculptures from DavidMac, beautifully composed on the beach. You’ve made an impressive setting, mixing the sculptures with their audience. Shame you decided not to hide Wally in there! I take your point about the awkward perspective. Actually, it works well; the only thing that really makes the front left sculpture look odd is the hole in the ground sculpture behind and to the right of it, where we’re looking down from a higher viewpoint.

I enjoyed michael sinclair’s Mongolian Death Worm, although to my eye it more resembled the sand worms in Dune. I like the digging action of the man, and the ingenious way in which the worm emerges from the sand. The sea, however, would be much more impressive if the top edge was wavy rather than a dead straight line. And your version of DavidMac's entry does indeed brighten it up, but I think it gives it an HDR-like unreality. When everything is so crisp and clean, it’s hard to believe.

“Not very excited about this week’s challenge,” says Vibeke; but that’s a masterful entry, with its disparate cast of diggers immaculately integrated into the landscape. Don’t do yourself down, Vibeke, this is a splendid piece of work. As Michael Sinclair says, “I can’t tell it’s been Photoshopped” - and there’s no higher praise than that.

Thank you, Steve, for writing it up at length. I agree with every one of your comments.
Yes, the arm is plasticky. Grey hair? Why not?
A turned boot is hard to paint. Yes, I tried and failed. I should have made it the same size as the other.
The golfer was not wearing Wellington boots when I first found him, so I must have put them there to raise eyebrows. You raised yours?
Yes, a bunker and a hole was needed, but it was 04:25 and I was fading fast.

Re: Challenge 852: Digging in the sand
Thank you very much Steve and Michale and David for their kind comments. I did have some help with this one from my granddaughter who pointed out that some of the shadows were pointing in the wrong direction, which I fixed by flipping that part of the insert.

Thanks Steve.

The reflections come courtesy of the Flaming Pear’s Flood 2 plugin.

Yes, I simply flipped, mirrored, positioned and adjusted opacity of the animation. I tried to make allowances for the timing but failed in everything I tried... so, it is what it is.
