Challenge 858: Bingo
This once proud cinema house in Brandon, Suffolk, spent its twilight years relegated to being a bingo hall before falling into total decrepitude.

Mariner, of course, will want to restore the building to its original glory. The rest of you may choose to knock it down - but do please show me how it looks before demolition is completely finished. Michael Sinclair, explosives may be required.

High res is here.

You are right. Thanks for the implied offer.

Not sure if this ever had much 'glory' to be restored.

To my eye, it's a very bizarre image Steve. The bingo sign on the canopy is so perfectly clean and straight and lacking in 'substance' that it looks completely photoshopped! Is this your photo or did you find it somewhere? I am curious to know if you know it's history. Am I jumping at shadows here? What do you, or others, think?

Here's one I found on Google Earth, dated 2021. I think Steve has fished his version out of his attic.

But let’s see what Mariner makes of it!

My own photo, unretouched. Not Photoshop!

Re: Challenge 858: Bingo
Oops! Seems there are two Bingo Halls in the Brandon area. Here is, I hope, the right one:

Re: Challenge 858: Bingo
The sign in your photo looked so at odds with the rest of the building I'd have been ready to bet it was 'shopped'.

Just as well I didn't!

Gordon, your video won't play unless I log in to Vimeo, and I don't have an account.

Thanks Michael

Vimeo have done something odd with copying a link. Hopefully it works now.

I really like your first one Loyd. Has a slightly Mexican feel about it.

Gordon, you normally add sound to your videos, but you haven't done on this one, or maybe it's just not working.

Hi Michael
No, there’s no sound on this one … but there might be if I have the time to do the follow-on video

Re: Challenge 858: Even Bingo halls can dream
I suspect this rather drab looking building never had any 'glory' to be restored in the first place.

But even Bingo halls can dream ................

Sometime in the late forties ....... the war is over and the new Brandon Odeon opens its doors to the public for the first time.

Best viewed away from strong light.

Pub Trivia: The distinctive deco design of many of Britain's Odeon cinemas came from the architect Harry Weedon. I remember them clearly from my childhood. Ninepence (about 4p) Saturday morning children's two hour programme. Roy Rogers and Trigger, Flash Gordon, Rin Tin Tin, Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry. It was utter chaos. The staff were saints and put up with us with great good grace.
