Challenge 870: The floating caravan
One of the oddest things I saw on the river this week was this bizarre houseboat, which is clearly more of a house than a boat. To me, though, it looks like a floating caravan.

Can you stick some wheels on it and put it back on the road where it belongs?

High res is here.

I just had to create a new account as I haven't been here for a while and accidentally deleted all my passwords!

Anyway, here's my quick attempt as I'm currently sat in my car waiting for the car wash! 😂

I think I'm suffering a touch of cabin fever after 8 weeks in lockdown with no end in sight. Enjoyed creating this scene as I was able to escape - in my mind

Good to see you again B2R(again) That's brilliant! Very well done.

That really took me by surprise Loyd. It works perfectly. Just love it!

It's incredibly rare for me to criticise you Anna but ...... sorry to niggle ..... the shot where they are on the boat they are huge (he especially) and should be behind the hand rail. It's physically impossible as it is. Otherwise it's just delightful and the end conversion is really sweet.

Not sure why, but had real difficulty coming up with anything entertaining for this one. So very literal minded entry this week.

Am I going loopy? Don't answer that! I see no entry from Loyd.

Smooth, expert stuff from Anna with some bouncy singalong music.

Oh mon Dieu!! How embarrassing!

I saw this entry that looked to be classically American and took it, without properly looking, to be Loyd's. Born2Run my apologies. The same compliment is due to you. A completely unexpected surprise that works perfectly!

Re: Challenge 870: The floating caravan
Thank you everyone for your comments. Made my day

David I agree. Although it looked ok when I did it, now looking at it again I should have moved the railing

This isn't part of the challenge but I wanted to try making the houseboat in Cinema4D and this is what I came up with. Parts of it I'm thrilled with but not real happy with the railings. Took about 3 hours to make.

Re: Challenge 870: The floating caravan
Hi Anna

For only three hours work that’s pretty good. I like it.

Don’t know what method you used for the rails but sweeping a circle along a spline is probably the quickest and simplest way of doing it.

Not sure where I am going with this week’s challenge. I can’t quite get my act together with it for the moment as I am not happy with what I have done so far.

Me too, I may just scrap everything so far and wait until next week.

You are a fast worker!

From my very limited knowledge of 3D I think the railings look excellent. To my eye the 'weakness' is that they are a uniform silver whereas in reality they would tend to reflect their immediate environment. But that would, from my position of extreme 3D ignorance, I presume imply modelling the entire scene and using a render that calculates the reflections. I suspect in this instance a far simpler solution would be to render them separately to their own layer and do a little simple 'tinting' by eye in Photoshop.

Funnily enough I am also doing a little exercise that isn't really part of the challenge, but using this houseboat. I'll try and post it tomorrow if it's ready.

Re: Challenge 870: The floating caravan
Gordon - I used cylinders and reduced them to size but the circle and spline sweep would have been easier and far more efficient. Thank you Gordon! I didn't think of that.

David - Thank you David. Many of the pieces are repeated and simply rotated into position. I did use an environment map but it didn't translate to the railings as it did on the windows. Feel positive that's due to my own inexperience but will continue trying different things in the hope I'll get it one day
