Challenge 886: The Maltese bordello
It's back to Malta this week, and an alleyway in the medieval town of Mdina. The building on the right, the sign above the door discreetly informs us, was once the entrance to The Old Greek Bordello (except that the sign abbreviates 'bordello' to 'bord..lo' to spare the blushes of more delicate tourists). Take us back in time, if you will. High res is here. |

As a mark of respect, Steve, I shall refrain from putting you in my picture cavorting with the ladies of the night. |

Interesting picture, Frank. Those three in the distance give it some balance The tart could be a bit tartier, but maybe that's just my poor taste in tarts. No, I don't mean that. |

Well this is setting the standard! Frank you have pre-empted me. The minute I saw that lamp I thought 'that's just too good to be missed!". _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Mariner, my research into images of those days showed many of the "tarts" dressed as such - maybe when they proceed upstairs they are a little less tartier (to suit your tastes) David - agree - those lamps cried out |

Re: Challenge 886: The Maltese bordello
Here's one to suit Mariner's questionable tastes. Had to delete some of my search history afterwards. Apologies to the ladies for this rather vulgar sexist image. When I saw the street lamps I thought YES perfect. I'll run with that. Then I realised that, in point of fact, there would not have been street lamps back then. So I adapted to just candles at the doorway. On reflection I think that was a good move. It was quite challenging but rather satisfying. Lots of playing with light and shadow, which I love best. It's rather large and very dark. Needs to be viewed well away from strong ambient light. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

What David has omitted to mention is that if you "click" on the image it will open out to a large highly detailed cinematic scene which cannot be appreciated until one does so. This is one of your best David, and it's certainly "Gold Star" material! |

Very nice David, you went back a little further in time than I did. I took your image into PS and lightened it up for a closer look - Mariner would love those huge bulbs that materialized. |

http://vimeo.com/653518661 David, I'd say this is one your best pieces of work. The lighting is superb, particularly the additional lanterns by the door. I love how each group interacts. Well done. Frank, equally as good. _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Re: Challenge 886: The Maltese bordello
The answer is they neither match nor interact. I spend a lot of time trying to find source images I can adapt to my needs. Here are the originals: You can see I have swapped headgear, moved arms, etc. to create the fit and interaction I wanted. A lot of other, initially promising, images fell by the wayside. The rest is simply arrangement and adapting lighting to try and create a seamless fit. But then we all do that to one degree or another. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
