Challenge 1041: Take the tram
This splendid tram carriage is in the Museum of Liverpool. This is the best image I could get of it – it was behind a glass screen, so there are some reflections.

It could really do with a better view for the passengers to gaze at, which the animators among you should have fun with. And perhaps a couple more passengers?

High res is here.

What a bizarre museum display! The look on his face together with their poses would seem to portend the tabloids about to have a juicy new paedophile scandal to print!

But I think I'll resist it ...............

Re: Challenge 1041: Take the tram
I am puzzled Steve. You describe this in title and text as tram. It looks terribly wide to be a tram and the sign over the door refers to trains.

It doesn't really matter (except it changes a lot what might be seen through the windows) but I am curious.

You’re right. It’s a train.

I'm putting it down to auto correction.

That doesn't alter the fact that I am currently completely stuck for ideas except the obvious ..........

A rare opportunity to see "Classic" Michael Sinclair in action again.

And yes I've remembered the glass!

If you go frame by frame you will see that arms and legs are moving.

Re: Challenge 1041: Take the tram
It brings back memories of riding high in the air ( 16 feet or so) along the docks from Liverpool to Dingle , about 6 miles long. , the views were very good of all the cargo ships loading/unloading all their goods.
The carriages were independently powered by electric motors and the in between carriages weren't powered ,I think that's correct.
The line consists of two tracks and at the Liverpool museum it is fitted on a portion of the old line at the correct height.
It closed in 1956 when I was 10 years old, how time flies.
All the best to everyone.

Re: Challenge 1041: Take the tram
For non Brits:

During WW2, when the blitzkrieg on London and other main cities began, huge evacuation programs were instigated to move children away from the bombing to the relative safety of the countryside.

Thousands of children with a name label pinned to them and a cardboard box on a string, holding their gas mask, were moved away from their family and home and taken on special trains to temporary 'foster' homes who volunteered to take them in. For many town children, especially those from working class families, it was their first sight and experience of the countryside away from the grime and smog of their city homes.

We are of a generation that can remember these!

It's impossible to convey the sensation to younger people. The ground below your feet quite literally trembling when they let off steam. I can still smell that special smell of coal smoke and hot oil together, even now! And the sound starting slowly and building up as they first start to move. No recording can capture it. You felt it as much as heard it.

I can't really think of anything else from my youth quite as tangibly nostalgic.

Very happily I can still experience the sight, sound and smell of steam engines as we have the Bluebell Railway just 20 minutes from my home. Sometimes I take Rags and he has a wonderful time barking in excitement at the sound ... but not while I am trying to record audio!!!

Re: Challenge 1041: Take the tram
Sadly most restored lines are Chuff Chuffs far removed from the thundering monsters of our youth. I just visited Bluebell's sight and they appear to have some big boys. If they get those under steam that would be impressive.
