Challenge 1088: The Great Dictator
More from the Chaplin museum, this time a reconstructed still from the 1940 classic The Great Dictator. In this exhibit you're encouraged to have your photograph taken with CC apparently trimming your hair. Can you suggest a dictator who might benefit from some tonsorial manipulation? High res is here. |

Steve, is Charlie Chaplin a distant relative of yours? I have often wondered. |

Not as far as I know! Although I imagine my uncle Charles Caplin might have suffered for it in his youth. |

Re: Challenge 1088: The Great Dictator
It's going to be a while before I can do anything. My MAC Studio suffered a drastic slow down. I couldn't find a cause so eventually had to re-install the OS completely and restore from a time machine backup. Unfortunately it also restored whatever was causing the problem. So now I am having to do a "Nuke and Pave". Re-format and clean system install and all the software one by one along with re-registering and activating for each app. I am about half way there after a day and a half. On the bright side I've got rid of a lot of ancient dross! Fingers crossed I'll be fully restored by next week. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

http://vimeo.com/1155416121?fl=pl&fe=sh My fingers are crossed as well. I hope you can sort it out, David. This type of thing is my worst nightmare. ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West:I'll get you, my pretty! And your little dog, too! |

Yes, fingers crossed David. Did you run MAC diagnostics before you started on the drastic stuff? |

Re: Challenge 1088: The Great Dictator
Yes. Ran a couple of diagnostics. Nothing found. Everything looked Ok on System Monitor with no visible memory or CPU hogs. The problem appeared to be mainly video related with redraws taking several seconds but other processes lagged badly too. Anyway it’s perfect now and i have all the ‘biggies’ re-installed. Now it’s a matter of restoring dozens of personal settings some of which were not exportable to an external drive for subsequent re-importation and will need to be re-built by hand. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I'm having difficulty in choosing a dictator to use, so this one is with Paulette Goddard as seen in the original film. Hopefully I can find a worthy dictator before Friday. ![]() |

She is Oona Chaplin. Actress. Granddaughter of Charilie Chaplin. He is Andrew “Dick” Tate. Influencer. Kick-boxer. Wife beater. He thinks he is great. The Great Dick Tate or what?

Always a pleasure to see what you're all doing. Compliments of the season to you all. Sorry about your system David. I know what you feel like. I spent almost 60k on a high end pc 16 months ago and 2 days ago I shipped it off to the suppliers. I am presently setting up a new laptop. What a job. I'm not putting all my normal software on as I would have to do it again in a few weeks time. At least I have PS to curb the creative juices. Ernst Röhm asking for "it all to come off". ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 1088: The Great Dictator
First to wield the barber’s scissors this week was Nick Curtain, with a suitably startled Boris in the chair. He fits that robe well – how about a reflection in the mirror? I don’t recognise lwc's elegant customer, but it does look like Charlie has done a good job there. I like the lighting. No reflection? Paulette Goddard does fir remarkably well in that chair, although perhaps the lighting on her face should better match the robe. If the mirror space is now a photograph then the whites should be toned down to match the brightness of the basin, which we must assume is also white. I don’t know Napaloni or, indeed, his country of Bacteria – but his head does fit remarkably well in there. What was the film? The Edward Scissorhands version is great, with Hillary and the array of presidents on the walls. Is that mirror now a window, then? And do people stick photos in window frames like that? A barbershop quartet from Ant Snell, but clearly not to Trump’s liking. I like the dripping blood on the barber pole in the animated version, but must point out that the Sweeney Todd song has just one singer. Still, the AI works well for the quartet, and the final gush of blood is suitably shocking. I’m sure I should recognise both the people in tooquilos's entry, but sadly they both escape me. Are those garden shears? Tin snips? I like the use of the Popeye cartoon in the animated version. Is that a lollipop in Trump’s mouth in Frank's entry? And how did you find a photo of Trump with reasonably tamed hair? I like the sign on the glass, but would have been great if it was a mirror. I think Mariner must have spent nearly as long coming up with “The Great Dick Tate” as on the image… a very entertaining piece of work. I like the open window. A few technical points: all the glazing bars of the window should point to the horizon, no matter the angle of opening; the woman’s feet are huge compared to her body; and her head really needs to go a little higher on her neck. I do applaud the sentiment, though. An extraordinary entry from dwindt, with Chaplin as an SS corporal – now that’s a stretch of the imagination! But a very nicely made image, and I see Rohm is actually reading a copy of Mein Kampf – good detail! Very fine work, although a reflection in the mirror would have been perfect. |

Thanks Streve. I agree, the window is poor. Thanks for the tip. It's in my head forever now. 'Her head should go higher on her neck'. I knew something didn't look quite right, but I couldn't figure out what. |

Sorry I missed this one. Mariner you win a bonus point for "The Great Dick Tate". I would love to have thought that one up myself. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1088: The Great Dictator
Thank you, Steve. You have a remarkable eye. How did you recognise "Mein Kampf." Well done! I considered the reflection but only started the image on Wednesday evening. I have become very lazy since I started blending 2D with 3D. I would have posed 2 characters in Daz Studio, manipulated their profiles in Zbrush, textured what I needed in 3DCoat and Photoshop. Then, render the image in Daz, with a pbr plain shaded as chrome to simulate a mirror, cut out the reflection in the mirror and past it into my challenge image and further manipulated it in Photoshop. Puff, pant....until I think of doing it in Photoshop alone. Where's my 3D programs...lol. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |
