Challenge 1112: The Major Oak
This week's Challenge comes courtesy of Ant Snell. He writes: In today’s news it’s sad to hear the demise of the Major Oak Tree, for the first time in 1,200 years it has failed to shoot leaf therefore pronounced dead. For anyone that is not aware, the Major oak was claimed to be the hiding place of Robin Hood set in the heart of Sherwood Forest. The Major Oak Tree is about 2 miles down the road from where I live and I have fond memories of playing Robin Hood inside it’s trunk as a child. In more recent years it has been fenced off from the public and propped up by scaffolding in a bid to protect it. It would be good to see it as I or even Robin Hood would have seen it back in the day. High res is here.  |

I always liked Robin Hood. He robbed the rich to feed the poor. Come back Robin, there is a lot of work to be done! |

This is harder than it looks. Get rid of the netting and posts and give its leaves back? That's a huge task! The temptation, of course, is to use a photo from times past. But, to me, that feels like cheating. I take the old fashioned view that a challenge with supplied photo should use it in some way. I had a walk down to the actual tree this week to have a look for myself. It was strangely eerie, lots of tourists from around the world, all stood looking in silence.  |

I like how you have done that leaf, Ben, very convincing, it would be interesting to know how you did it. Customised brush? That’s what I tried, but not to that standard. |

Seems Ben and I are on very much the same track. This is my cheeky solution how to deal with the dead leafless tree and keep it alive. When you look at pictures of this tree with people in them it's surprising how small it is. Until I found some old pictures I had imagined it much bigger. The Robin and Marion of popular imagination. Came across this stainless steel tree in Washington DC. Title: Graft - Artist: Roxy Paine - Material: Mirror-polished stainless steel - Height: Approximately 13.5 metres (44 feet) - Installed: 2009 - Location: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. The sculpture is one of Paine's famous "Dendroid" series. Every branch was digitally designed and then fabricated from stainless steel before being welded and polished by hand to resemble a living tree. The reflective surface constantly changes with the sky and surrounding trees, so it looks different every hour of the day. |
