fireworks
i had trouble not using brushes. i dont like the look of the hard edges along the tree tops... i tried the technique in the book about the refining edges... but maybe that was the wrong aplication for it. did anyone else try this exocise? or have any suggestions?

Re: fireworks
To ease 'hard edges' I usually use a layer mask with a soft brush set at low opacity and just lightly go over them. The other thought would be to add some back lighting as the fireworks seem to be behind the tree line as opposed to in front of it. You can probably do that with an outer glow added to a duplicated layer of the trees (beneath the original cutout layer) and then mask out... soften the outer glow toward the edges.
