Non destructive dodging and burning
Want to dodge and burn an image in a non destructive way? Follow this!

1. First, isolate your subject on a separate layer (here we will use a fine piece of techonology as our example)

2. Create a new layer, fill it with 50% grey, and set it to "soft light" in the layer mode drop down menu.

3. Press "d" to bring back your black and white foreground background combination. Select a soft brush, bring its opacity down and adjust its size as you wish. If you use a pressure sensitive pen tablet, you can skip the opacity thing and adjust it in the brush menu directly for the pen to react to the pressure you apply to the pen.

4. Paint with black to burn and white to dodge (on the grey layer). use the"x" key to toggle between the foreground background colours. Cool huh?

5. As an added bonus feature, I added a background and a shadow. Damn! the Dodging and Burning also are applied on the underlying layers! What can we do!?!

6. Simple enough! Just constrain your grey layer to your subject by creating a clipping mask. First select the layer to be clipped (the grey layer). Go to Layer>Create clipping Mask. Or, use the drop down menu in the layer pallet. Or hold the Alt/Apple? key as you bring your mouse over the frontier between the grey layer and the subject layer (in the layer menu) and click!

Tadaaa!

I admit, I did not invent this, it comes from The Photoshop Guys that you can see at http://www.photoshoptv.com. Look at episode 60 if you did not understand what I just demonstrated, you can't beat a video. But I felt like making a tutorial. And the clipping mask is from me!

Very interesting. I often use the burn tool for doing the shadows and being permanent always was a problem.

Thanks

One thing I don't understand though. Why do you paint with black and white rather than just using the dodge and burn tools on this 50% grey layer?

Of course if you're lazy like me, then a drop shadow on a grey background, and be done with it

A little two-dimensional, though!

You know what? I don't know! I just tried it and there is no real difference! It was just a bit faster painting with a brush then using the dodge and burn tools...

Black and White on the left, Dodge and Burn on the right...
