Change Color - of a Section
Another extract from a Jesús Ramirez video: Change Color - of a Selection This example used a blue couch and a Yellow circle - change couch to yellow : HSB denotes Hue, Saturation, Brightness. If we simply used the Hue - Saturation Adjustment layer it would be almost impossible to control the brightness with the Brightness Slider. The method to follow will create the Hue and Saturation on a different layer and the Brightness will be controlled by a Levels Adjustment. Make a Selection of the object of the color change (ie couch) In Layers Panel create a Group and make a Layer Mask on the Group from that selection ( this one mask controls all layers within the group ) Create a “Solid Color” fill-layer making it your color of choice (this will apply all components of the color (H,S and B) Change the Blend Mode to “Color” which will retain H + S and get rid of B Create a Levels adjustment layer above the color fill layer enabling us to adjust the Brightness by moving the sliders ( In particular the upper right Highlight Slider and the Center Gamma Slider to adjust Contrast Note; the lower sliders can also be employed to limit Brightness levels To change colors simply change the color of the Solid Color Adjustment layer |

Re: Change Color - of a Section
This is very interesting. I often use Colour fill layers as a way of colouring something that contains little colour information (like a white shirt for example). I have always done this in multiply mode. This method is much more universally applicable. Very clever and useful! When I first tried it didn't work. It took me a while to realise that the Levels adjustment layer must be unclipped to penetrate through the yellow layer to the image below. (My photoshop is set to clip adjustment layers by default.) On playing with this I found that if you place the Levels adjustment below the colour layer it works the same way whether clipped or unclipped. I find this easier. Thanks for this Frank. I like it. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Yes, I have mine set the same so i should have mentioned Unclipped. Moreover don't give up on Hue and Saturation Adjustment layers as they are still very useful - targeting specific colors one example |

Use it all the time. Especially for completely recolouring. I think, after curves and colour balance, it's possibly my most used adjustment. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
