Announcing... 100% Photoshop
It gives me enormous pleasure to announce the completion of my new book, 100% Photoshop. We're all used to seeing Photoshop as the best image editing application on the planet. But sometimes we just can't find the right view of an object we want to include in our montages. The solution? Draw it yourself. 100% Photoshop teaches you how to create stunning artwork - without using any photographs. Absolutely everything in the book, from skulls to tennis racquets, from wood texture to pocket watches, from iPods to trees, is drawn only using Photoshop. No other applications, 3D programs, plug-ins or photographic sources have been used. You don't even need the latest version of Photoshop: just about any version from the last five years, or even older, will work. The book comprises nine chapters. The first is about techniques, covering the basics of masks, adjustments layers and so on, before going on to teach the best way to use Dodge and Burn, drawing in perspective, and two very different ways of making metal. After that, each of the subsequent eight chapters opens with a double-page illustration. The chapter then goes on to detail exactly how each element in the illustration is drawn, with full step-by-step instructions for every process involved. The chapters are: Setting the scene The Private Eye's hallway. Learn how to create wallpaper complete with tears and stains, doors, lighting, rippled glass, metallic lettering, light switches, and dramatic shadows. Deep Space The quick way to draw stars - and planets, moons, spaceships and even entire galaxies. The Desk Drawer As well as building the drawer itself, using the wood texture we created in Chapter 1, we'll also find out about drawing iPods, watches, paperclips, elastic bands, rulers, coins, a magnifying glass, and more. Fantasy art Not all artwork has to look realistic. In this chapter, we'll see how to create a fantasy character, using a surprising range of techniques. In the attic The longest chapter in the book, this one devotes several pages to creating the guitar alone - as well as the birdcage, ice skates, cardboard box, tennis racquet, rail sign, crystal ball, sheet, cupboard, bowling ball, light bulb, bicycle wheel, and so on... not forgetting the attic itself. Future tech This gadget from the future comes complete with scanners, fizzing gas lights, glowing liquid tubes, lit buttons and hand grips - and it's all drawn directly in Photoshop. The Great Outdoors Nature is tricky - especially for the Photoshop artist. In this chapter we make custom brushes for leaves, grass, flowers and even sheep; we see how to make bark texture, stone walls, and complex pond reflections. Plus, of course, the easiest way to draw clouds. Still life The final chapter takes its cue from the Old Masters, with a carefully composed scene that includes a skull, a candle, a couple of old books, a piece of cloth and a metronome. 100% Photoshop will be published by Focal Press this Spring. I can't tell you how proud I am of this book: it's both the hardest and the most enjoyable book I've written, and it sums up virtually all my Photoshop knowledge in a single volume. I'm hoping to have a launch in London on publication, and I hope as many of you as possible will be able to get to the event. More details nearer the time! For those who are considering buying the book, it would help me greatly if you order it through these links - and, indeed, if you order ANY of your Amazon purchases by clicking on these links first. In the UK, click here. In the United States, click here. In France, click here. Thanks for reading Steve |
