My desk drawer
Good, bad, or indifferent, here it is. Totally NOT satisfied with the watch casing (I want YOURS, Luis!) and the magnifed glass - but they will do for now. I'll keep at them til I "get it" or go crazy trying! The elements I added are all 100% PS - and how much fun was that!?! The earring wire is my first attempt at using the pen tool on my own design - loved it! Sometimes one gets so close to their own work that seeing what's wrong/needs attention eludes them. That's me.........so, any critique is more than welcome. Now, on to making a monster. Joey ![]() |

Re: My desk drawer
Great work Joey! I'm happy to see your finished work. Excellent. Its great you become a friend of the pen tool ![]() I would have a small pedantic comment about the hour vs minute hand on the watch as raised with Luis re the hour hand needs to be at a different angle (very small point). I think your iPod looks great. I only have some thoughts, which I can not comment well at the moment, when an object is on surface, it has a tendency to reflect itself as well as, or, the shadow. So for example maybe for the cigi, should have a small reflection to place it in the glass ashtray more firmly. Only small points and "maybes"(?), I love the overall image! Look forward to the next ![]() Trevor |

Fantastic work! I really like all the extra touches - the paperclip intertwining with the key, the nicely modelled spliff in the ashtray, the chewed eraser on the pencil, the earring - really good stuff. Congratulations! |

Re: My desk drawer
Thanx Trevor, Steve. Re: the clock hands - I agree. When I was "setting" the time, I wanted it to be 4:19, and didn't even THINK to fix it when I was fine tuning at the end. When I (finally) get a watch case I'm satisfied with, I will fix that. And yes - there would be a reflection of the joint, wouldn't there? Another fix, for sure. (By the way, Steve, I've never heard the word "spliff" before - is it a regional expression?) You know, when I was teaching (art) I would spot these things in student work immediately......it's very good, and somewhat humbling, to have the shoe on the other foot. Know what I mean? Thank you...........Joey |

Re: My desk drawer
I know what you mean Joey ![]() I've always loved art when have time. One lecturer/teacher of A Level Art and History of Art was a great re-inspiration and great critique for all of us that remained ( 8/30 )to the end of the evening classes (we were working at the same time, so just night classes) and we passed! (Not sure his painting/drawing technique was great, but I enjoy. We liked him ![]() Maybe I should not say this but when he bought a real partial skeleton to the lesson it was a bit weird (study human anatomy) Very minor point Joey, variant on my comment: maybe its not so much a reflection with your angle of view, but more the diffuse effect as the light reflects off the object from the different angles of the 3D objects, if you know what I mean? Very subtle. Great work again, take it easy, Trevor |

Yes, for many years, teaching mostly adults, at a Junior college. Loved EVERY minute of it. (And, I was very good at it.) Re: the reflection of the joint - maybe I need a bit of the ashtray color cast onto the bottom of the joint??? Very, very subtle. ........trying to visualize that. Like the colors from the battery and pencil on Luis' watch.....but different. Ahhh, so many possibilities! Joey |

Re: My desk drawer
Yes you're right Joey the reflection goes both ways ![]() Sorry if you left after enjoying teaching, but I don't know, our lives move on. I think Luis has great ideas and well shared. Enjoy, the challenge, good for all of us, Trevor |

Re: My desk drawer
Hi Joey, I really like your image. I think you did an excellent job. One of the things that I like is the wood texture. For me, it is a challenge to come up with textures created in photoshop. You have created your objects very well. The key is cool and the ear rings. The only thing I can think about is maybe you can add a reflection on the bottom of the ash tray and on the wood surface. Also maybe offset the shadow a little since the joint is not touching the desk to give it a little more depth. Your pocket watch is excellent. I remember from an earlier topic that you were having problems having text around the edge of a circle. Looks like you finally did it and it looks great. I read that you want my watch casing as indicated in your first post above. I know that you can creating something that comes close to what I have. All it takes is to experiment with the bevel and emboss settings and using the curves to give that shiny look. |

Re: My desk drawer
Hey Luis - textures - wow! I've been taking photos of different types of wood, 'cause I have no idea what "walnut", for instance, looks like. It will be fun to see if I can duplicate grains in PS. Glad you like my "objects" - it was a bit scary; I was afraid I wouldn't be able to make them good enough to meet the caliber of the things Steve presents us with. On a scale of 1 to 10, I think I did about a 7. That's plenty good enough.... for now. I did the face of my watch the good old way - rotate/rotate/rotate. My PC REFUSED to do it Steve's way. And, it doesn't seem to want to do the casing YOUR way. So, a few questions re: the directions you gave. Is each of the first 3 steps done on seperate layers then merged for the next two steps? I'm totally stymied! Is there a PhotoShop for Dummies??? ..still struggling, Joey |

Re: My desk drawer
Joey, Here is the amount of layers creating the casing. It has a total of 5 layers. I used 50% gray color for the watch casing (step 1,2 5 below). Please note that the Watch Casing layer (indicated by the yellow arrow) is a little smaller than the Watch Base Layer (indicated by the red arrow). You can see that by the selection in the step 2 layer. I also provided the settings for the curves and the Hue & Saturation. Also, The following layers have different Layer Blend Modes Curves Layer - Blend Mode: Soft Light Hue & Saturation - Blend Mode: Color Step 5 Layer ( indicated by the blue arrow) - Blend Mode: Hard Light As for the rest of the Layer style settings, you will have to experiment. This is how my watch casing was made. A. Step 1: layer just has a drop shadow and Bevel & Emboss layer styles - (red arrow) B. Step 2: This will start to add the Metallic effect to this layer. - (yellow arrow) Inner Shadow Bevel Emboss Satin C. Step 3: add the curves to give a more metallic effect D. Step 4: Adds some color to it. E: Step 5: Gives the casing that rounded look to it - (Blue arrow) Inner Shadow Bevel & Emboss ![]() |
