WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
This was a challenging one Steve -- lots of objects to create, arrange and keep straight. I built each article in separate PSD's on the same size layer as I planned for the finished picture ( to aid resizing later) and also saved them as PNG's on a transparent background. Some problems I encountered were anywhere from deciding how to create the initial shapes ( ie: marquee tool, shape tools, paths, etc) --- to trial and error on getting the metal effect with curves( finding blending modes, dodge and burn seem to help). Enjoying the book and lessons and learning alot -- one gets to practice with a wide array of PS tools and other hidden goodies. Thanks for a great book and will probably purchase your other books once I finish this one. Here's the link to the larger view: http://users.eastlink.ca/~fbwhite/desk-drawer.jpg Frank ![]() |

Fantastic work, Frank! I really like the way you've populated the ashtray, very convincing! Creating everything in separate documents is certainly a good way to proceed, and in fact it's the way I built the scene in the first place. However, if you do so then you really must pay attention to the relative scale when you assemble them. That iPod is huge, next to the ruler - and the magnifying glass is tiny! A little overall shading, particularly towards the back of the drawer, would help the realism. Well done completing this exercise, though, there's a lot in it. |

Re: WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
I am really enjoying the book and this project. However, I am having a problem with one operation and I had it in the planets section as well. In Ch. 4, it is drawing the winding top. I set up the black and white circle but when I try to do the distort, that filter shows as not available. I have followed the clipping mask as set forth. I have drawn the lines and then selected a circle around them and I have even tried making a smart object but in each case, the distort filter is not available. I am using CS5. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Joe |

Joe, This is strange. I can't think of anything specific you're doing wrong, except perhaps that you're trying to apply the filter to an empty layer. Can you post a screenshot of your image, with the Layers panel open, so I can see what the problem is? Steve |

Re: WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
Steve is there a possibility of a new 100%? Its the most useful book I own, its very satisfying when you create every object by hand. Frank, I created my images at 300dpi and roughly 4000px big, just in case I ever wanted to print them at poster size. It's always best to make them too big than small, although I think I used about 40gb for the book, and possibly destroyed a motherboard, a graphics card and that laptop fan! ![]() _________________ Quote of the day.. Re: WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
Joe, I'm not sure what you mean by the "clipboard format". When you make a new document, Photoshop does indeed default to the size of the current object on the clipboard - but you can just override these settings and type in any dimensions you want. What are you finding is greyed out? |

Re: WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
Thanks for you continued help. The following are grayed out for the desk drawer: Extract Filter Gallery Pattern Maker Artistic Brush Strokes Distort Pixelate Distort Texture. In addition, some of the plug ins are blocked as well. Today I tried different new file formats and the clipboard option is blocked out even though it came up as the first choice yesterday. The Photoshop Default and some other formats I customized do not block any of the filters. I am at a loss. Joe Joe _________________ Joe |

Re: WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
Are you perhaps working in CMYK? A lot of filters only work in RGB. Try converting the image, if you are in CMYK (without flattening) and see if this helps. *EDIT: Ah - just checked your screen grab again. It's very small, but it looks as if you're in 16-bit mode. Use Image > Mode to change to 8-bit, and you should find everything works again. |

Re: WOW- Chap 4 - Large Project
Thanks Steve. That did clear it up. I switched to 16 bit because something else was not working in 8 but now I can't remember what it was. I appreciate all the help. I still have a copy of How to Cheat from 2002. I am planning to update to CS6 as soon as I decide whether to go Windows or Apple for my next computer. I will pick up the CS6 version of your book when I do. I really appreciate all the help. _________________ Joe |
