Cardboard Box
My first attempt at using 100% Photoshop. Such a satisfying feeling completing this!

Steve, I never realised the versatility of the Clouds Filter. It has enormous scope and one I look forward to exploring further.

Now a question….Can you please explain the benefits or reason why you state

“make a new HARD LIGHT layer, filled with hard light neutral colour” ?

Im a bit confused and can’t understand why it would be done this way rather than just painting on the colour.

Anna

I had a go at this too, but did not have time to add the 'Fragile' label.

The parts that confused me were:-

Step 4 - reference to 'Change layer mode to Diffuse to wiggle the lines'. I cannot find a diffuse and your texture looks much more realistic than I've managed to achieve. Steve, do you mean dissolve?

Step 14 - If the copy is placed behind the flap original and used as a clipping mask, it should have no effect unless the copy is moved, but there is no reference to that. Also, the top edge should show thickness, but if you move the copy, you end up with a gap on the top left point. I would have thought it would have been better to extrude the flap copy? I have to admit that this step has me baffled.

Re: Cardboard Box
Good work from both of you - looks like you have it worked out.

Nick, you're right - it should have read "dissolve" rather than "diffuse". I'll correct it in future printings. And yes, extruding the flap copy is a perfectly reasonable way to go about it.

Anna, the reason I suggest a hard light layer is that then it's possible to adjust the wrinkles and shading without damaging the original. For example, after painting the wrinkles using Dodge and Burn, I then like to use the Smudge tool to smear them into a more realistic shape. On a hard light layer, we can smudge just the shading without smearing the texture as well.

Re: Cardboard Box
Thanks Steve
Have to say that drawing objects from scratch is so rewarding and the book really helps take use of Photoshop to a higher level.

Are you able to write a book called 'How to find more time to use Photoshop'? If so, I'd be placing an advanced order now.

Thank you Steve for clarifying about the Hard Light layer. A fantastic tip to know about when using D&B.
