Rendering Brick
Undaunted by my lack of skill rendering mahogany, I've moved forward to the brick texture--fun stuff!

However, on Step 6 on p. 25 "Rendering with Lighting Effects" I've encountered a snag: after copying and pasting to the new channel and selecting the RGB channel and creating a new layer, where is one supposed to apply the next filter (and the recommended settings)? If in the Channels, which one (some don't allow the filter to be used) or is it in the layers?

I don't post question 'til I've tried several times to correct the issue myself. Any tips are heartily welcomed!

Re: Rendering Brick
From memory you apply it on the new layer that you have filled with white. Lighting Effects allows you to use the new Alpha channel as the texture channel.

Make sure you try to correlate what Steve is saying with what's in the screenshots. The full projects in the book are really demanding and require a lot of time ( many, many hours each ) and much experimentation. However it is much more rewarding in the end than completing a tutorial where everything is prescribed.

Re: Rendering Brick
OK, Scooby . . .

the white layer is NOT in the Channels but rather the Layers section, then? This is what the text says:

"With the basic texture complete, Select All and Copy the texture. Open the Channels panel and make a new Channel; then Paste the copied texture into it.

Return to the RGB image by clicking on RGB in the Channels panel, then make a new layer and fill with white. Choose Filter > Render > Lighting Effects and choose the new Texture Channel, Alpha 1, from the pop-up menu at the bottom of the dialog. Adjust the
settings as shown here to render your bricks."

It seems to indicate the white layer is a new channel rather than a layer. I'll try it out as a layer. Thanks for the tip! I am determined to get this correct.

Brick Update

Scooby, you were right. Thanks a bunch for your invaluable input. My first attempt didn't come out as quite as perfect as I'd like--but it was a darned stretch better than previous attempts. On to the next chapter!

Re: Rendering Brick
Brick and wood are both tricky textures. I think you'll find the following chapter more fulfilling! And do post your results for us.

Re: Rendering Brick
I'm using PS CS5 and can't find Lighting Effects under Filter>Render anymore. Did PS guys put it elsewhere or is there something else I should try?

Re: Rendering Brick
Rod,

Are you using a Mac? If so, The Lighting Effects filter is still there in CS5, but it only works in 32-bit mode.

To use it you have to quit Photoshop, then select it in the Finder and choose Get Info. There's a checkbox there to make it open in 32-bit mode, and you should find Lighting Effects restored when it opens.

A pain, I know, but at the moment, it's the only solution.
