Stroked Circle
on page 82, direction #6 it says to draw a stroked circle. i've looked at numerous tutorials on stroking, but nothing achieves the look of the pocket watch. it makes a nice ring that i can't copy.

any help?

and yes, i am a newbie.

Re: Stroked Circle
In the picture the stroked circle has Bevel/Emboss applied to it. Have you done that? Stroking the circle will just draw a plain line round the edge.

Re: Stroked Circle
yes, i did try the bevel/emboss. i can't get it to look like a ring. i tried a stroke with white, size 3 outside. I get a nice effect on the outside of the circle, but the inside is still solid gray. how do you shadow the inside of the circle to make it look like an actual ring sitting on top? I tried inside and outside bevel, as well.

Re: Stroked Circle
I found a way to do it, but it wasn't by stroking. I'm using Photoshop 7, so maybe they've made it easier since then. Will have to look into CS5.

Out of curiosity I tried it. I used a similar grey to the background as the stroke colour, 10px wide but I think critically I changed the contour to "cone". Seems to produce the desired result.

Re: Stroked Circle
Scooby, I tried what you indicated above including changing the contour, but I must be missing some important step. I have to create the circle, duplicate it, scale the 2nd one down and delete the center from the first layer. Works like a charm, but I'm sure there's an easier way. Anyway, I'm learning alot and I'm going to finish something to enter in our local fair. I only need to start/finish it by Sunday. lol

I'm so glad I found the book and this forum.

Re: Stroked Circle
Aaah, I think I know what is happening. To create the circle I did the following

1. Create a new layer.
2. Using the circular marquee tool make a circle selection. No filled color or anything just the "marching ants" circle.
3. Stroke the selection with 10px dark grey. This gives you the ring required with no colour in the centre.

Sounds like you are trying to make it out of a solid colour circle in which case their is no inner edge for the bevel to "effect".

Hope this helps

Re: Stroked Circle
That's absolutely right, scoobyclub. The new circle must be on its own layer, without any fill inside the circle.

You're turning into a handy sort of person to have around!

Re: Stroked Circle
Ok, but that doesn't work in PS7. You have to have a fill to get the stroke.

Re: Stroked Circle
I'm surprised but not having PS7 for some time now sometimes I forget how much PS has changed. Still, you worked out a way to get the required result which is possibly an even more useful exercise.

Re: Stroked Circle
Linda,

I use photoshop 7. To create a stroked circle is easy.

1. Create a new layer.
2. Use the circular marquee tool to creae a seletion.
3. Then go to Edit > Stroke. A window appears with settings for the stroke. Type a number for the sroke and select the location of the stroke. Also choose the color of the stroke and click Ok

You circle shold now have a stroke around it.

I hope this helps.

Luis

Re: Stroked Circle
I really should have added a section on strokes to the first chapter... it must have slipped my mind. Sorry for the frustration, Linda, I'll correct this in any future editions!

Puppet Warp really is amazing. And the Content Aware Fill is fantastic, too. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it.

Re: Stroked Circle
Well, I entered my final project at the fair and took 3rd place. First place was a gradient text on a black background with a child replacing the letter I in the text. It was clean but simple. I think I went a little overboard but I learned alot and appreciate all the great help on this board.
