metal ring in chapter one
I am having problems with the perspective and shading. When I get to step 6 and try to select all, photoshop wants to select the whole canvas, not the ring itself. I opened a new blank canvas at the beginning and followed all the steps and can't get past step 6.

Hi,
You need to have the Move tool selected to make this work. If you still have the Elliptical Marquee selected it will do what you have explained.

I tried that but it didn't work. When I try to delete the selection, the centre ring turns white (the background colour) but I can't get rid of the "marching ants".

Select All will always select the whole canvas - that's its purpose.

The "marching ants" merely indicate the presence of a selected area, and don't necessarily show that there's anything in that selection.

It sounds to me, though, as if you're working on the background, rather than a new layer - could this be right? If you're still stuck, can you post a screen shot of your workspace showing the Layers panel open?

I am having trouble getting a screen shot of the workspace (still pretty new to all this) but this is what I am doing: I open a new background, make a new layer, draw the elliptical, follow steps 2 - 4 without difficulties, at step 5 I press Q to leave QuickMask and hit the backspace or delete, that leaves a gray oval with a white middle and marching ants around the white, if I then try to select all, it selects the whole canvas and not the gray oval. I can't seem to get past that.

Point 5: delete the selection. Haven't you forgotten that? Press Ctrl»D, than (point 6) Ctrl»A to select all (the whole canvas). Now comes the misunderstanding in point 6: a little fault in the book. You must press Ctrl»Alt as you nudge up a few times with the up arrow key on your keyboard. The moment you start nudging, you'll see that the ring gets selected in stead of the whole canvas.
Lots of succes!!
