Aligning 3D objects
I have been trying to make a 3D object which I then add more layers so I can apply different textures. Using the pen tool I trace around the bit I want to put a different texture, do the horizontal wraparound, then make the extrusion wider to fit the existing shape. I merge the layers, but it never seems to come out level with the original shape. I then spend ages trying to get them to align. As far as I know the original shape is level and on the ground plane. Is there any way that you can snap to a previous 3D shape? |

Re: Aligning 3D objects
Hi Deborah -- as far as I know there is no way to snap two objects together ( a feature I'd like to see and mentioned a couple of times to Steve) - the way I've been doing it is jumping back and forth between the various views and manually moving and sometimes using the co-ordinates and arrow keys to tap into place. I used to use Bryce 7 at one time and that had the option to snap together or to snap to object below as well as to join at various angles ( made things much simpler) Perhaps we'll see that down the road. |

Re: Aligning 3D objects
Merging layers can often produce misalignment, but there's a simple workaround. Here's how your layers might look - completely unaligned: Open the Properties panel, and you can see that the coordinates for each object are all over the place: Click Reset Properties and then [/i]Move to Ground[/i], and the selected object will be zeroed: Then repeat for the other object: Now, when you change the angle of view, you'll be able to drag vertically to stack the objects so that they're precisely aligned: What I don't really get, though, is why you're using the Pen tool to make selections. Can you explain this further? |

Thanks Frank, that was pretty much what I was doing. Steve, I was using the pen tool to trace around the areas I wanted to add another texture to then extruding it….Might have helped if I had read the piece 'filling a wine glass'. This time I duplicated the layer then edited the source to select the area I wanted the new texture. That worked, apologies for not reading all the book!! |

You can add multiple textures to a single object, as well. Have a look at the section on painting on texture, and you'll see how you can work out how the texture map aligns with the layer. |

Re: Aligning 3D objects
I must admit I get a bit confused with materials and textures. But am I right in that with the 3D shape I did, I needed 3 layers to get differing amounts of 'shine' for the wood, stone and marble? If I was just using one 'material' as in stone then I could do the painting on texture? I will try it. |

You can create masks for each attribute, so you can control the amount of shine etc on each part of the model. A bit fiddly, but it does mean you could construct this whole object as a single unit. |
