Re: Contest 168: Refrigeration
First of all, I'd like to say how impressed I've been by everyone's entries this week. It wasn't an easy Challenge to start with, and the quality of the work has been terrific: and, of course, the quality of the inspiration that has led to so much ingenuity.

First up was mguyer, whose solution to opening the other door was to flip the fridge horizontally. Now that's a real cheat! Well stocked with goodies, but copying the contents wholesale from another fridge has meant a slightly awkward perspective. It gets better in the second entry - but if you're opening the other door, you need to flip the handle as well as it's now facing the wrong way. I like the revised view in the third entry - but watch your perspective, Marty! That left hand door doesn't match the room!

Perfect door opening from Brian Ruddock, with very neatly continued shelves and basket - and the glass doors at the top have been perfectly replicated in perspective (although the presence of so much tinned food seems a slightly odd choice). Don't you think, though, that if there are two doors, this might imply two separate compartments? Perhaps the left one's a freezer?

Chris Berry has got the freezer section just about right, and the inner framing works particularly well. I like the idea of taking the compartments off the inside of the new door, but surely they should all be removed, rather than just the middle ones: a slightly odd perspective on the ones you've left behind.

A well opened door, an neatly filled shelves from srowden. I like the inclusion of the man in his pyjamas with the milk moustache, but you've made a classic mistake here. He's standing behind the door, as shown by his arm protruding backwards from the top, but the position of his feet shows him to be some distance in front of it. Either that, or he's extremely tall and he's lifting the fridge in the air. You can place his legs in front, while his arm is behind - but you need to scale him down so his feet are on the same ground plane as the rest of the scene.

Well, this must have taken some time: vibeke's fully stocked fridge is crammed with milk, sauces, bread, salad, and what looks like an assortment of New Zealand wine. The perspectives are all perfect - great work there! And the way it slots neatly into the kitchen must have required some careful distortion. I can see you've had to widen the opening somewhat - either that, or you have a novel collection of rather thick books and very squat jugs.

Another kitchen scene from GKB, with a rebuilt fridge that looks just a touch small for the kitchen it slots into. A very neatly made interior, if a little booze-heavy on the contents: but, again, I'd say two doors means two compartments. And while you're there, you need to empty the trash, Gordon.

Not just opening the left door, but closing the right one as well: tooquilos has given us a fantastic animation, that's both funny and skillful in its construction. My only real issue here is with the handle on the closed right hand door, which should be facing the other wy. Otherwise, it's a real treat!

A great animation from james, too: I wish I could recognise what that cartoon chicken is going to such trouble to bring back. But I love the way it hops up the steps of the shelves to get home, and the giant burger in the newly stocked fridge is a great touch. Again, flip the right handle on the closed version!

A different view from Elliott, complete with fridge magnets and a grocery list. The contents look a little squashed together: stretching them horizontally would have helped here, I think. And with so much crammed into so little space inside the fridge, wouldn't it help to move some into those empty spaces in the door? And flip that handle on the other door!

A host of possibilities in michael sinclair's magician's cabinet of a fridge: a neatly opening door on the elevator, with perfect perspective on all the contents. The way the left door jumps around in size is a little disconcerting, though!

A first entry from xboxmaniac this week, and there's some good work here: the turkey fits well into that shelf, and I especially like the way one of the Coke bottles has been partially drunk. The ice dispenser is a neat touch, and the fridge magnets above it add interest; but since we're looking down on the shelves at that level, shouldn't we be able to see the floor of the ice dispenser as well? Otherwise, any glasses placed in there would disappear into the void... Great first entry, Steven - welcome to the forum!

A composition of some genius from Meltonian: excellent contents on the original fridge, and a perfectly opened and seamlessly blended new half. This is amazingly good work: the attention to detail is fantastic, the angles are perfect, and placing it in a darkened kitchen really makes the interior glow come alive. Brilliant!

A neat joke from Ben Mills, and rotating the fridge to a front-on view adds a new perspective to the Challenge. But... flip those door handles!

A funny entry from katew, with well blended snow and a cunningly contracted fridge. They say that eskimos have however many words for white, and this is a good example: the snow inside is a different colour to the snow in the background! A touch more blue on the interior, Kate.

A fine assortment of greenery from Abby-Helen Artfield, and a good gag - Kermit's song does make good sense of the contents. Watch how you place things on the shelves, though: those stalks on the top shelf in the door are slipping down.

A great mixture of contents from Neil O, who's using his fridge to store everything from books to videos to cartoon hams. That's obviously a cool collection of reading material, Neil. Great perspective on all the contents, though!

Very good angles from Deborah Morley, although it's hard to tell just what's interesting the cat so much - can't be the melon, surely? Or the fish painted on the side of the Japanese bowl? Great transparency on the half-empty milk bottle, and I suspect you half-emptied it in Photoshop: good work!

As we start to get closer to Halloween, Challenge entries start to get grisly... and Neal's gruesome bunch crawling from the fridge are as disgusting as we could wish for. Excellent grimy, gory texture on the inide of the door - but I really think you should get an engineer in. Your fridge seems to have turned itself off some years ago.

A fabulous makeover from char, with a stylish new set of doors and shelves. Perfectly arranged contents, and a huge amount of additional detail: the reflections, the sparkle on the handle, the condensation, the opened interior glass doors... this is fantastic! What great work!

The beginnings of a gruesome entry from fngirl, with well placed items inside, and good use of Plastic Wrap on that slime on the floor. When you're adding rows of bottles, though, you need to shear them to avoid the stepping effect we see here: best approach is to make a row of bottles on the flat, then distort the whole row to fit the space.

Another gruesome view, this tome from Steve Mac: for those who don't remember, Dahmer was a serial killer who ate one or two of his victims. A neatly spooky scene, then, and the staircase suggests that we're in a basement (even if it is one with rather impressive classical columns). A very atmospheric, moody piece - but I am wondering why the floor stops short of the bottom of the image.

Very funny work from josephine harvatt - but do watch those perspectives! Some things can be flipped; others - like wire shelves - aren't so straightforward. But a good gag, so I'm not even going to mention the fact that the dividing bar between the doors is wonky, and shouldn't really be there at all. Oh, sorry, it just slipped out.

I like the salesman idea in celosia's entry - a pity you couldn't find a suitable character to play the part! The eskimos are looking suitably impressed by the technology, but what's that think in the foreground? An eskimo who's lost his face? Or a large pebble?

Great stuff this week. I've really enjoyed myself.

Re: Contest 168: Refrigeration
Thanks Steve. I was wondering why it didn't quite blend, and now I know it's the snow colour. I'll get there in the end!

Thanks Steve, it was fun, and took some doing. Thank goodness for Photoshops Photomerge. Here is a photo of the real kitchen. Needed about 4 shot, for the kitchen and several more for the contents, my fridge not quite that wide either, camera has something to do with that. Shame we didn't do this a couple of weeks ago, when I had just cleaned my fridge.

Heh!

There is a reason that I use speech bubbles so much you know - misdirection, all misdirection...

More glaring I thought was the weird handle and the lack of an edge to the door. I am in the throes of opening a studio gallery at the moment is my excuse but once things slack off I shall try to be a little more punctilious!

Thanks Steve after reviewing the image more closely I can tell you I did resize him, but I guess not enough I went to my own fridge and noticed where my eye level would be and I tried to mimic it. Also the body is one image the pajamas are another. I suppose I did well with the belt shadow if you didn't notice hehe. Thanks for the kind words always great to learn from your mistakes! cheers!

I think the thing on the sled is a person so bundled up in furs you can't see his face - that looks like his hand on his lap...
