Let it not be said that I don't conform...occasionally.
Lot of brave entries this week

Re: Challenge 261: Making bread
After declaring this week’s Challenge impossible, Josephine Harvatt came up with a good stab at it - complete with a row of baguettes, a warm glow in the oven and a couple of dedicated chefs. A good choice of technique here - the walls, though, could have done with a little texture to stop them looking flat. Nice lighting!

Splendid work from Gerard, with custom lettering on the sign and on the glass. The baker himself, though, looks a little desaturated for comfort: perhaps a shadow on the wall behind him would help? And I have to say, the Stefano Caplini bakery does have a god ring to it...

A modern update to a pizzeria from tooquilos - note the size labels on the wall, the LED sign, the poster and the rather miserable Gordon Ramsay. All becomes clear in the animated version - a great soundtrack!

A Breugel inspired Old Master from brewell, beautifully integrated into the original oven - and with another from the series on the wall behind. A great setting, and details such as the wall shadows add a lot to the scene. Very fine work!

A semi-modern boulangerie from mguyer - keeping the brick wall is one thing, but painting it bright red is perhaps a mistake! Good matching of angles in this one, and that new oven does slot neatly into the fireplace.

A bit of hanging around, then a flurry of activity from james’ bakers. Excellent arm and neck movement on the man nearest to us - almost enough to make me ignore the rather dodgy shadows (under the rolls spilling over the edge of the table, and the shadows on the wall-mounted implements are surely on the wrong side). Nice pacing to this one, though.

A new member this week - and Chiro has started with a beautiful first entry, with excellent shading both on the figures and on the wall. The headless figure on the ground gives a clue to the sinister nature of the pies being baked - and is Sweeney Todd sharpening his razor? The window looks rather more wall-mounted than set into it, though. Lose the shadow on the near side, and add a room reflection to make the glass. Welcome to the forum!

A bit more destruction from China, with holes knocked in the walls on both sides. A good sense of the brick of the walls here, although the bricks should line up with those we can see by the plank. I like the snow landscape - what a cold scene this is.

I’ve noticed michael sinclair’s passion for blowing things up before, and it’s certainly evident in this week’s entry. Well, that’s one way to warm the fireplace, although I don’t spot much bread being made here. A real shock in the second entry - Michael on topic! Is this a first? Great fit!

A great baker from katew - yes, it was a difficult Challenge, but it works well. The perspective on the left wall is fine, but it’s not matched by the other wall: the top of the fireplace, and the surface of the oven, define the vanishing point of the scene. The right hand wall goes up where it should go down!

A charming couple from Nick Curtain, who seem to be getting rather too chummy for a baker and his customer. Is that a bunch of baguettes, do you think, or is he just pleased to see her? Great fitting of the shelves and display case!

Very neat work from Deborah Morley - note the way the shadow of the ladder touches at the top, and gets more distant as the ladder leans away from the wall. Very good reflections, but I think the signwriter could do with slightly more opaque paint.

A rare self portrait from Ben Mills - racy outfit, Ben! A great new room, and plenty of bread being baked here. You should probably invest in an implement or two, if you don’t want to burn your hands.

A ghostly scene from gaoxiguo - it looks as if the original scene is painted onto the walls. Or is it behind glass? And why is the girl (but not her hair) transparent?

I really like Emil’s bizarre, surreal entry, with the breadheads baking their own heads in the oven. Where did you find so many different views of the same body? A great idea!

A very fine hand drawn quality to LonnieK’s entry, tying together all the elements very neatly. There’s perhaps slightly too regular a 45 degree angle, especially in the background, but the effect is appealing and interesting. Good work.

Thanks Steve. Hope you had an enjoyable holiday. The paint was only the first coat, hence the translucency!

Many thanks for your comment; I am glad that you like it. The persons were made in Poser. It is great tool for person modelling.
