Re: at last: generative AI inside PS
But, the Friday Challenge (FC) is an exercise to improve oneself... if we use AI I don't think we necessarily sharpen our skills. That remains as a self-evaluation at the end of the day. I do not think it is mandatory to indicate that it has been done with AI. By doing the FC I have improved a lot and that helped me produce better results for professional work, in the same way each one has different purposes. If it were a "done without AI" competition then it would make sense to specifically state details of its completion. |

AI and the challenge - a suggestion.
Well it's Thursday so I guess most opinions are in by now. It is quite clear that we all feel that this challenge is about self improvement and fun. Reading everyone's comments I am moving away from my initial feeling that Steve should request that AI must be flagged. Last week Ben offered up a stormy sea image which he created using generative fill as the basis followed by his own refinements. He stated this clearly and I think that is quite proper and acceptable. This week I deliberately posted an image in which I used generative fill so outrageously that I couldn't in all conscience call the image my own. To not declare this would be to deceive everyone, myself included, and would, in my view, be improper and unacceptable. It is clear that everyone is already using these tools for re-touching, selection and so forth. In the end the big question mark is generative fill. We all know and respect each other here. That is the basis of why we take part. I would like to propose a simple honour system. If you think you have used AI to an extent that has radically affected the creation of your submission then I think it should be declared quite openly. After all, how we use it will I think be of great interest to each other. I am quite happy to toss my hat in the ring on this basis. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I agree, David. Using Generative Fill to extend an image is acceptable. But even here I’ve been able to produce extensions with GF that would have taken hours to do manually. Since these extensions are usually backgrounds to the image, though, I don’t think there’s a problem using Photoshop in this way. When it comes to the main focus of the image, though, we do start to get into trouble. Michael Sinclair asserts that he could best any AI-created image - I’m sorry, but I don’t think that’s the case. If you check out this week’s Friday Challenge, you’ll see I used the same image as an example in my CreativePro feature. Michael, are you saying you could reproduce this scene using conventional Photoshop tools? If so, please take it as your personal challenge for this week. I’ve just written a longer feature on Generative Fill for CreativePro (sadly it will be available only in the magazine, to subscribers) and I’ve been more and more impressed with the tool’s capabilities. And bear in mind we’re just at the early stages of what will prove to be a very long journey. |
