That's odd! Steve told me it was a new iWatch. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Interesting. The polls show a 60-40 split between bottom right and top left. The true answer is bottom right. Here's the room, sadly with the indentation (for that's what it is) just out of shot on the plastered section of wall on the left. I've been staring at this, on and off, for the last 20 years, always intrigued by the gestalt of being able to see it either raised or indented. Thanks for you comments! ![]() |

In my mind there are two light sources, the window and the reflective floor, diffused from the floor perhaps, but still there. |

That's a very good point Loyd and what looks like light reflective dried grass outside. There's an element of the little boy who cried wolf here. Because it was Steve who posted we all knew there had to be a catch somewhere. I almost wish he had double bluffed us and posted a true bump so he could watch all our contortions and analyses and innocently proclaim "I don't understand why you are all finding something so straightforward so difficult!". _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: [Poll] Up or down?
You can of course see this effect in PS with Layer FX Emboss. Move the light direction from bottom to top and, in most situations, you can see things transform from bump to hollow right in front of you. It's because of the conditioning I mentioned in my original reply. We instinctively interpret on the basis of light coming from above. Another example of this is the "negative face". In this well known illusion a mask of a face is rotated. The concave side will suddenly transform to convex. In this case it is not because of light, it is because we are so conditioned by the fact that faces are always convex that our mind instinctively rejects the alternative. Conditioning over reason. You can see this wonderful and almost unbelievably compelling illusion Here. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
