Backing up a MAC
What is the best way for backing up a MAC, I have been using Timemachine, but after having it turned off for 2 month, it seems to be having trouble. I don't seem to be able to go back more than a couple of days. OK it's pretty full, I'm suing a 2tb drive to back up a 2tb machine. so I guess I need a bigger drive, but will that solve the problem or is there a better way. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Backing up a MAC
Hi Vibeke I had a similar problem with my Mac. My Time Machine drive was a 2TB external drive but I had it partioned and was using just 1Tb for time machine. Eventually, even though I had TM set to delete the oldest backup when space was needed, it wasn't doing it, and I couldn't go back further than a few weeks. SO, I took the bull by the horns, and copied the back ups that I had, to another drive temporarily, and then formatted my 2TB drive. I then used all that space as my time machine and thus far is seems OK. Not sure if this really helps or not. I understand that there is another method to Backup but I do not know it. I find that the Adobe Mac Users Forum on the Adobe forum very helpful. Good luck Mark _________________ Mark Goodwin If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got! |

Re: Backing up a MAC
Hi Mark, Thanks, what is the size of the drive on your Mac? Mine is 2TB, same as the timemachine. It worked OK until I went away for 2 month. So I'm seriously considering buying a 4TB drive for time machine. Not much use backing up if when you need the files you can't find them. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Re: Backing up a MAC
Hi Vibeke My programmes and software are all on the original drive which is 640GB. I then added a 1TB internal (not Raid) for all data. Then added a 2TB for external Storage I use this is as a back up and also the drive that I take with me when I go away with the Laptop. And finally another 2TB external for Time Machine. Finally I upped the Ram to 32GB. All on early 2009 Mac Power Pro desktop. Hope this helps Mark _________________ Mark Goodwin If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got! |

Re: Backing up a MAC
You can specify in Time Machine prefs what you want to back up: it doesn't have to be everything on your Mac. For example, you almost certainly don't need to back up your Applications folder, since everything in there can be downloaded again easily. That will save you a lot of space. I also use an offline service - Copy or Dropbox - for backing up essential files, including work in progress. I find this works well, both for backup and to ensure that I can access those files from other computers. |

Thanks, Dropbox is great, you are right I should probably not back up applications. I did decide to get a bigger backup drive, one of our stores had a 4tb for sale for only 125.00 pounds. I'm working on backing up my rawfiles to a cloud storage. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |
