Cloud backup - Storage
I keep taking photos, and it's no longer a good idea to put the originals on DVD's, I also store them on external drives. In the last year I have also been backing up to the the Cloud. Thought I had found a solution, Just Cloud, very slow but working. I was using their Unlimited space option. then I got an email saying I had gone over my allocation.
I had just over 800GB backed up.
I started reading more and try other sites. Found there is a difference between Backup and Storage.

Carbonite and BackBlaze are backup, if you delete a file it is also deleted from your backup. BackBlaze does not let you choose what to back up, you can exclude files, but that's time consuming.
Carbonite was easy to set up.

Crashplan seemed to tick all the boxes, it is storage, e.g. does not delete files from backup if you delete them on your computer. Reasonably quick, with my broadband 10-12 GB/day.

I thought I had finally found a good plan, and then I discovered if I remove a folder from my computer, it will be deleted from the backup set. I could probably leave old folders empty and everything will be fine.
BUT
Computers don't last forever. If I get a new computer, I can under CrashPlan adopt it and restore my photos from CrashPlan. However, when I get a new computer, I'm unlikely to want the same file structure that I have on this computer.

So back to the drawing board, I think that I will have to go and buy some more external drives to back up to.

Just some rambling thoughts, I'd be interested to hear your experiences.

800GB sounds like a lot of photographs!. Stupid question, but have you considered reducing the file size/resolution when you upload? It's so easy to end up with hundreds of 5mb photos of cats! (like me).

Have you tried sites such as Photobucket?http://support.photobucket.com/hc/en-us/articles/200724444-Plus-Subscription-Pricing-Info

Google Drive? they offer a 1tb for $9.99 https://www.google.com/settings/storage

Windows One Drive? (Good for lots of users on a network).

Thanks, Goggle Drive could be an option, I shall look into that. I don't want to reduce my files, I'm saving the Raw images, feeling andy editing I have done and saved can always be redone. Probably better second time around.
cheers
