Not a happy bunny
This morning I switched on my Mac Pro and ......... nothing ....... it just sat there with the little LED in the on/off button winking at me. A little Apple Support research identified this most probably faulty memory. So after an hour of pulling DIMMS pair by pair and attempting to start, I found that it is indeed the cause. One pair of DIMMS lost. 8GB gone! Poof! Just like that ........... I work very large images and Photoshop is c r a w l i n g ........ Ho Hum ... time for some internet shopping. Have to ship from the US for best prices. I am not a happy bunny!!

Wow 32 GB of RAM! 
I use 16 GB of RAM, and I honestly don't see any difference between the 8 GB of RAM and the bigger 16 Gb of RAM which I now use. This from a well-satisfied PC user.  |

Ah! I didn't express myself very well. I don't have 32GB. Not all the slots are 8GB pairs. Two pairs are 4GB so it was 24GB total. I just had the bad luck to lose one of the 8GB pairs. That is a loss of one third of all my memory. I work very memory intensive images for large format print output and it does make a real difference!

The best place to buy memory in the UK is Crucial. You should be able to replace your RAM with little difficulty. For what it's worth, I run my iMac on 32Gb RAM. It does indeed make a difference, especially if you're rendering a 3D scene in the background while working in other applications in the foreground. |

Thanks for that Steve. It's much closer for shipping and no import duties. I'll go check their prices. I certainly find RAM makes a huge difference. Wonderful site Steve. Thanks. I discovered they also have a european site priced in euros. They have the DIMMS I need (not everyone does any more for the 2008 Mac Pro) at a not too frightening price so I shall order. They are also offering SSD's at very reasonable prices so I may go the whole hog and replace my main system drive. I am awaiting a reply from their customer support to confirm absolute compatibilty. Give the old girl a bit more verve! She's had a few add-ons and upgrades over the years and still runs beautifully. Adding an SSD will make a massive difference - not so much while Photoshop is running, but certainly when starting up applications. Photoshop now loads for me in about a second, which is incredible compared to the time it used to take. |
