A small announcement of a big step
Just thought I would let you know that at seventy five I have finally decided to retire. I took the decision earlier this year but have only started to announce it officially now.

I have worked in movie and TV since I was twenty one. It’s been a fifty four year roller coaster ride that has taken me all over the world. I have, for the most part, travelled alone without my own crew and worked with directors and crews in place. I have worked, and laughed and cried with people of every conceivable race, religion and politics and learned the joys of understanding and adapting to utterly different ways of thinking and perceiving. It has taught me that our common humanity is so much more important than our religion or politics. I feel myself incredibly privileged to have had such a wonderful opportunity. I don’t regret a moment - even the bad times.

So we have sold our big loft and moved to something far more modest, still in the centre of Brussels, to both reduce outgoings and create a retirement fund.

Not sure what the future holds for us next. Certainly some serious cooking and creating new illusions will be two major focuses for me. I want to travel with my wife and without my work, while health and energy still permit. There's still a whole new world to discover ........

………… and of course there’s always more learning How to Cheat!

Re: A small announcement of a big step
I started my new life when I took early retirement on 29 April 2007; I can truly say it was one of the best things I have ever done. I loved my job but hardly ever think of it these days.

Enjoy every second of your retirement.

And a nice shot of a 56 Squadron Lightning. Never did manage a ride in one of those but I did get to shoot one before they were finally retired. It was years later before the USAF had an aircraft to match its performance.

Me neither. I just got to film it burning up my entire years income tax before it was half way down the runway.

Shot from the back seat of a Hawk. Terrific fun especially dog-fighting with another couple of Lightnings and then, a little later, bouncing a couple of USAF A10s.

When I was younger it was always my ambition to go on working to the nice round figure of eighty .........

.............. but things never quite develop the way we expect.

Enjoy your retirement David. There's plenty to do. Keep fit, a healthy mind and body with plenty exercise, which can take a lot of time.
