Johann Sebastian Bach - Toccata
Some time ago I was fooling around with the 'Sound Effector' in Cinema 4D. This allows an animation in response to any sound input. I played with it for a while and then decided to have a bash at creating an animation to a piece of music. I had a couple of pieces in mind; one was a piece called 'Anthem' by Vangelis and the second was an arrangement of Bach's 'Toccata' for the organ re-arranged by a group called 'SKY'. I settled on the latter. SKY had as its members John Williams (classical guitarist), Herbie Flowers, Kevin Peek, Francis Monkman and Tristan Fry. I first heard this arrangement performed in the Albert Hall at the end of the '70s. The animation lasts for 8,600 frames which took an amazing 408 hours of rendering time on a fairly powerful iMAC ... 17 days  In contrast the colour effects took only a couple of hours to do in Hit Film.

Not quite sure what to say Gordon ........ 
Height = volume, frequency = colour? What the hell did you do with your Mac tied up for 17 days? I could NEVER do that! 
I am tempted to feel that that the result per se does not justify the render times. But the attempt is magnificent! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Happily it’s the graphics card that does all the grunt work. I could still use the iMAC for Photoshop work as that’s working with the processor and RAM. The only real problem was that I couldn’t use Cinema for anything until the render was finished. The original render’s colours were changed by key framing in Hit Film. If I tried to do this in Cinema I would still be at it at the turn of the next century  _________________  |

That is incredible Gordon. Very well done. Beautiful piece. I can't believe it took so long to render. I would of given up after day 1. When I was working for the TV station, one of the guys worked exclusively on Cinema 4D and when it came time to render, the IT people sorted it out for him, but he could harness the power of all the computers in the department which reduced the render time substantially. Some type of shared render. Im not entirely sure how it was done but it worked well _________________ Dorothy: Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore |

Your patience is amazing Gordon, excellent! For me, after waiting 5 minutes or so, doubt would have creeped in and I would have shut the whole thing down...

Network rendering. Most good 3D apps provide for that now. Of course it does depend on the availability of additional machines and I don't think my iPad counts ...........  _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Network rendering. Most good 3D apps provide for that now.
