Something to amuse some of you ......
As I mentioned elsewhere, a while back, I am a fanatic cook and am using lockdown to get started on a cookbook for my children and grandchildren. Using Affinity Publisher which I find really astonishingly good. Did a course of ten long tutorials to get started and found it very instinctive and easy. Anyway Affinity is not the point of this post .........

I have done twenty one of the simpler pages so far. It's a lot of work as every recipe has to be written and every dish and drink has to be made and photographed, in some cases with photos of stages of prep as well. I think it will take a year or more at least. Particularly as some dishes can't be made without specialised ingredients which we can't obtain until lock down eases and imports start again.

The book follows a fixed format throughout with recipe on left hand page and full page photo on facing page. The recipes are written out in the usual manner with a short introduction, followed by ingredient listing, followed by method. Which brings me rambling eventually to the point of this post.

One recipe page is laid out completely completely differently from all the rest. I thought it might amuse you.

If you are not familiar with Ikea's distinctive instructions this is unlikely to be very meaningful.

Excellent. I really like the illustrations.

However, the grey bars on the header and footer are awful. Remove them.

You are seeing them out of context Steve. That doesn't mean to say you aren't right of course!

The book has a kind of 'stainless' theme running through it. Here is the front cover from which the rest takes its cue. This is not the finished cover it is a placeholder, but the finished will be all but identical with the same basic composition.

The chapter heading pages all have similar full page photos that exploit a stainless theme and environment, and all of which contain a 'panel' within the picture to receive the chapter Title.

The headers and footers are intended to follow this theme.

I shall wait until I have the whole thing closer to completion before I make any decisions. To change them is the work of moments as I only have to do it on a master page layout and the change will be applied to every page. So I can easily try a few options.

But thanks for the feedback. It's always good to have.

Sounds like a great project David, look forward to hearing more about it. I love Michael's first photo.

The first is a beautiful match Michael! The colour of the reflections really echoes the burners below.

To be honest my first thought was "way too much!".

That being said and done you have set me thinking. I think I might keep this very 'masculine' design in reserve for a chapter heading. If every other heading is plain type, as planned, it would really pop. The chapter on utensils, tools and machinery might really work with a more discreet exploitation of this idea.

One to ponder. Thank you.

Very long term Vibeke. But it's great for fighting lockdown doldrums.

David, I agree with Steve and love the illustrations, simple and straightforward, (as they should be, although I am no expert by any means)
I like and prefer Michael's first text suggestion - seems to add class to what looks to be a fine book in the making.
Good luck on your adventure.

The illustrations are a joke just for that one recipe because it is based around an ingredient from Ikea. I though it would be entertaining to borrow their little man and inimitable instruction style.

The rest of the book will have the usual text instructions (with illustration occasionally where necessary.)
