A VERY COMPREHENSIVE LOOKING FREE ANIMATION APP (Win/Mac)
Because I was an Affinity user I now have a Canva ID as result of their acquisition of Affinity.

Today in my mail I got a notification from Canva of a free animation application called Cavalry (presumably a new acquisition like the Affinity suite).

I know zilch about animation but, out of curiosity, I downloaded it. To my untrained eye it looks quite extraordinarily comprehensive (if you are is ignorant as I, intimidating even). You need a Canva ID but that’s free.

As with the Affinity Canva apps the basic app is complete and fully featured with no restrictions, but there is a paid upgrade subscription if you want to have access to AI features.

Whether it’s good, bad, or indifferent I wouldn’t know. But nonsense it is not! This looks to be serious pro level software.

So we have few animators here. Might be worth a look? If you do investigate do feed back here for the rest of us.

I downloaded Cavalry about a month ago but haven’t had the opportunity to use it yet. I have also just downloaded MAXON’s new Autograph which is an After Effects and, in my case, a Hit Film replacement. Both Autograph and Cavalry have the potential to force Adobe to get back to a more sensible (less expensive) arrangement for providing software.

With the likes of Autograph, Cavalry, Da Vinci’s Resolve and Fusion and Affinity providing much needed competition for Adobe’s Premiere and Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects I think we are seeing a big revolution happening in software provision; a revolution that Adobe has brought on itself because of their piratical practices. I always thought that Dick Turpin had been hanged: turns out he has been employed by Adobe all this time.

When Adobe started its subscription system I felt it was only a matter of time before competitors stepped up. I just didn’t think it would all happen so quickly.

I worked in my professional capacity with professional colourists using DaVinci Resolve when it was a hideously costly system that came with it's own hardware and could only be found in professional post production houses. It still is for most serious professional use. The physical trackballs and other controls make it so much more tactile and connect more directly with the senses than onscreen virtual equivalents and that is what professionals want and need.

I was stunned when suddenly it became available free ported across to Mac and PC. I downloaded it immediately and started to play. It felt quite extraordinary to be able to do myself what before I had needed my colourists for. I loved it!

But it made me realise just how incredibly skilled, subtle and sensitive my colourists were and exactly why I still needed them as much as ever before.

The App maketh not the man ..........
