Rhyme time – or not
These are way off-topic but they deserve better than dead in a flash drive. Hopefully someone else will post something they've written.

The Players

What's up with these players today?
They want to be on the starting line-up
With nary a practice.

They feel they deserve a home-run
Every time they come up to bat.
What's up with that?

What happened to being
Satisfied with a single base hit
The first time through the lineup?

If they don't score they sit
Out until they are released
To play with another team

I blame the coaches

The Patient II

I never met
You but I do
Know you are deeply
Loved because a
Score of your friends
Have shown up here
Unbidden

Eyes far away
And red because
They too see death
Beckoning you
To the divide
We all must cross

They turn to us
Begging for a
Bit of themselves
To be siphoned
Off in hopes
Of saving you

It falls to me
To explain how
It’s not that simple
You are particular
About who you
Find acceptable

They cannot help
You in this way
I can only give
Them compassion
And the offer
To help another

But it is of
Little comfort
When they come to
Grasp they are powerless
To prevent your
Passing

The Loss

How do you mourn the
Loss of the ephemeral?
A string of ones and zeros
Hidden behind the screen

Hacker’s victim or
Technical glitch
I should have
Made a back-up

Miscarriage

Thoughts, ideas
This is great
Flowing, streaming
I'm a genius
Blank, blank
I just had it
Scribble, strike
Take a break
Fumble, mumble
This is shit

The Elder

She lives in the past now
Fading farther away
By the second. Now
I am an orphan, the
Elder, the keeper of the
Names and stories

How can I be counted on
To provide good counsel?
It was not so long
Ago I was one of these
Young faces now turning
To me seeking guidance

What a cruel joke life plays
On us making us hoary
With age but on the
Inside we are children
Holding fast to the
Memories of our mothers

A Flight of Fancy

Hardwood horses dice
Specimens of intestines
And hang lithe strips of
Flypaper on Christmas trees
While defecating purple
Popsicles on the sidewalk

Gold Star Mother

The sun shines brightly today
But not for you
Children go to school.
It was not so long ago
I sent you too
Full of hope and promise
Now unfulfilled.

Did you call my name?
Were you frightened?
Or in pain?
Did anyone witness
Your last moments
In sands so far away?

You left that day with all the rest
Full of youthful optimism
You told me you’d be back
And you are, but in a box
With ceremony and a flag
Today, guns will fire for you
Twenty one times
Your age minus two
