An optical illusion

David, I saw this image the other day and I thought you may like to add it to you optical illusions folder. My first thought was there is a huge gaping hole at the top of the building but looking at it again I realised we were looking inside the building and the huge gaping hole is part of a dome.

The actual building is called Church of the Holy Redeemer of Ani in Turkey

Re: An optical illusion
Interesting. The more you cover the bottom the more compelling the inversion.

It depends on this straight on symmetrical angle. Most illusions depend on a unique viewpoint to work.

Thank you for this. It's always interesting when illusions emerge by chance like this.

Added to the archive. Thank you.

Re: An optical illusion
I thought I would add this optical illusion: how is it possible for the spirals to be moving both up and down?

I haven't had time to really analyse this but, off the top of my head, the two cylinders are left and right hand 'thread'.

Re: An optical illusion
Now that is much more interesting!

Again off the top of my head, without proper research, this looks to be a circular variant of the impossible (Penrose) triangle.

This triangular construction is interestingly (if you find such abstruse matters interesting ) mathematically equivalent to a möbius strip with a triple twist - to which your figure bears more than a passing resemblance.

But, of course, you all knew that already .........

That description pretty well sums it up.

Picture a long Toblerone twisted lengthwise 360 degrees and then curved around on itself. Then just rotate the Toblerone.

What a truly graphic and excellent description. You are liable to get quoted if am pontificating upon the subject in the future. I wish I had thought of that.

Which puts me in mind of the rivalry between Whistler and Oscar Wilde who once commented "I wish I had said that". To which Whistler replied "You will, Oscar. You will!".
