Taj Mahal infrared

Just got back from India yesterday and had to have a look at the series of images that I shot in infrared, this being the first one I looked at. The shot was taken shortly after sunrise so the full infrared effect was not possible at that hour but it is still worth a look. Had I been able to shoot it a couple of hours later the sky would have gone a deep black while the white marble would have stayed quite white in contrast.

The image still needs some work to remove the people which I will do when I have more time.

Although I have visited India a few times this was my first chance to see the Taj Mahal; all I can say is that it is waaaayyyy more beautiful than you expect. Hope you enjoy the pic.

Had you shot a couple of hours later removing the people would probably have become a HOTCHIP technical challenge. Probably have been an all day job ........

After more than three score visits to India in the last twenty years I have to confess I have still never seen it. Such a shame .......

Actually I had anticipated the need for people removal so I took two or three shots with the intention of aligning and stacking them so that I could just erase people using an empty bit of background. I’ll get that done when I have the time.

My biggest problem of the trip was that I managed to lose one of my cameras containing all my record shots around the country. There were a few images for Steve for possible Friday Challenge use.

The other method of people removal is to shoot a long exposure with a 16x neutral density filter. I was talking to a chap recently who shot people-free images in Venice using said filter. He was shooting 8 minute exposures on a tripod and the people just didn’t register as they were moving around. But he had to shoot a second ‘normal’ image for the sky as clouds move quite a bit in 8 minutes. The result was a shot of Piazza San Marco with no people unless they stood still for a long time.

Being an Infrared image it appearsin black and white. Unfortunately all the colour images were lost when I lost that camera.

Glad you are back safely Gordon. It's absolutely stunning. Once the people are removed then the true feeling of serenity will shine through. How was Varanasi? Any pics from there?

Thanks Anna. I am afraid that all the really good pics of Varanasi were lost with the camera that went astray. That included some video I shot of a road junction in the town. I had to video it because nobody in this country would believe the total and utter unadulterated chaos of noise, cars, cycle rickshaws, motorbikes, bikes, cattle, goats , dogs, people, more cattle and a funeral procession all disregarding any possible rules of the road. It was hilarious.

The serenity of the Taj Mahal would have been most welcome even if only for a few seconds.

Wonderful shot Gordon, love the reflection. I am looking forward to some more of your IR shots

The loss of a camera is one thing, but the loss of your color images and video must have been initially devastating.

Thanks Loyd. I'm trying not to think about the lost images.

I Had time today to work on this Infrared image of the Taj Mahal. This consists of three stacked and aligned images that I used to eliminate as many people as possible. Don't worry it's all quite legal and no tourists were hurt in the creation of this image.
