Re: Amazing drone footage
Very impressive sequence.

I would love to show you my take on this but, unfortunately, I don't have a handy bowling alley nearby and even if I had there is the problem with Covid restrictions and nobody is wearing a mask and ....

The type of drone that is used for this is quite small and very agile. It is flown by what is referred to as First Person View (FPV). The 'pilot' wears a pair of goggles to see and control what the drone sees. He flies it as if he is actually onboard. The entire sequence is carefully choreographed and rehearsed and as you can imagine is potentially quite dangerous as one mis-judged move means someone gets a drone smack in the face.

Thanks for letting me see it. I'll get back to you ... sometime

Re: Amazing drone footage
Thank you Steve for this. Totally mind boggling.

I wonder how many bent drones and how much scratched paintwork the rehearsals cost ............. ?

I have done stuff in the past (not with drones) where you get the actors to act in slow motion so you can speed up other aspects but it's monstrously difficult and rarely convincing. Plus, in this case, I don't see how you could do it with the balls rolling. But it's not impossible.

A few years back the pop group OK GO produced a staggering drone one take video with Japanese girls dancing. They sang half speed while riding on motorised mono cycles while other parts of the action were left to speed up so the two speeds are combined in one action. Bearing in mind it was shot in 2014 in the infancy of drone photography it is just staggering.

I'm sure you must all have seen it but, just in case, it's here.

It really is a must watch!

And if you want to see it at the actual speed it was shot it's here:

Somehow, however, this clip really feels like real time. Can drones that tiny have obstacle avoidance built in Gordon? Could it be pre-programmed to fly a route with such precision or would it have to be manually piloted? It must have taken some serious trust and balls to be an actor in this.

It's frightening to think what the military must be doing with this technology. I read somewhere about them getting multiple miniature drones to act independently but in concert so as to hunt in packs each with different roles and functions. Bloody terrifying!!

Re: Amazing drone footage
Obstacle avoidance is pretty much standard in drones these days. I would be surprised if these drones didn’t have it. My own Mavic has it and it’s most impressive but I use it to avoid trees and things not beer bottles or bowling balls.

It is possible to pre-programme a route but I wouldn’t think that was the case with this particular video as the tolerances are just too tight. I might be wrong but I reckon this was hand flown ... and by someone who knows what he is capable of doing. There are lots of people out there who can fly these specialist sequences but I am definitely not one of them.

So it is claimed. I have examined it several times and can see any signs of join. I have often wondered if it was shot in Japan so as to get sufficiently disciplined dancers.

And so cheap! I don't think I'll be buying. I am the kind of pilot who would be bound to hit someone - avoidance or no avoidance. Murphy's law.

Re: Amazing drone footage
Here's another from the same pilot. It somehow doesn't quite touch me as much or am I just getting blasé?
